Where do the candidates stand?Police Station? Fire Station? 20th and Depew? City Hall? Heritage Center? Parks?
Any candidates care to weigh in on the direction Edgewater should take for these projects or share your general community development philosophy?

I was watching Godzilla last night. I think we should have a board or commison on Giant monster protection.

Already have one. The Public Safety Review Commission. Of course they only exist on paper in the ordinance. Only a fool would go up against a monster.

Public Safety Review Commission?About 30% of our City's budget is spent on public safety. Citizens should have a chance to review how that money is spent, and speak to Council. And they should know that Council will take their questions seriously.
I'm running for citizen input, and I think our citizens are smart enough to make smart recommendations. We MUST staff a Public Safety Review Commission, and strong boards and commissions are my top priority running for office. We live in 10 square blocks. It's a small town. Let's empower our citizen boards and commissions and let people who are passionate about a certain issue study, talk to neighbors, and advise Council.
Our public safety spending is something that troubles me greatly.
Who's feeling brave? Apply for an appointment to that board. Study the issues, and if I'm on Council, I'll back you. Take the time, study the issues, and bring me some solutions (like a well-organized community-watch program) and I'll fight for you on Council. I'll put the City's resources behind community crime prevention, and fight (hard!) for an efficient police force that makes our community safe.
Our current police station is well-situated. But it's also dilapidated. We CAN take back that station and let it run well. Obviously, dealing with a permanent home for the police station involves speaking about infrastructure citywide. But our city owns lots of barely used property. I'd favor selling some of that property, buying back our cop-shop, making it modern and effective, and keeping our community safe.

This election is right smack in the middle of our city finally getting its administrative act together. It seems some of our new candidates are not aware of the changes and actions already being implemented to do just what they are campaigning on. If they get elected I expect they will, in essence, being handed a silver platter to stand on.
We have a new city manager who is doing all he can to get our finance department in order. It has been sorely lacking in any skilled employees in many years. According to the people hired by our CM to straighten out the mess this will take until about March. In the meantime the CM is trying to hold off on the big expenses until he knows what we have to spend. OMG!!!! Can you imagine such a concept?
Devon, any chance you have spoken with the Police chief about your ideas? Might be a good idea.

Are you saying that eminent domain is your plan?

If Devon ever spoke to the Police he would have been informed that several community watch programs are and have been in place for several years now. If you want to run for office check into things so you can make an informed comment without looking stupid.

Not so fast...At least Devon had the nerve to talk about his ideas. As a citizen without an inside track to a lot of information ordinary citizens aren't privy too, I can see why he might state such positions. Thematically, if not entirely accurately.
Perhaps Devon can consider this constructive criticism and take the direction provided by going to speak to the CM or the Police Chief.
In fact, I hope all candidates needing to learn about the realities present in the City at this time, will feel empowered to have those conversations with City officials and perhaps those "in the know" will be willing to share the information.
Because, as we all know, information hoarding by those with inside access is a sign of a dysfunctional organization.

Encourage all Candidates to Disclose
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
In Washington DC I could see how Marion Barry might get elected to public office but not Edgewater.
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
If the Candidates don't disclose information that could be harmful to the City do what I did and conduct a public records search to learn about the backgrounds of people who want to run this city.
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
If your an alcoholic, drug addict , can't hold down a job, unable to manage your finances or life, serious past arrests........... Do me a favor and don't run.

I won't name names because each voter should be able to make up thier own mind.

It is the silly season in Edgewater being an an election year. I don't see any reason to ruin a persons reputation, but on the other hand we all might suffer. Honesty goes a long way in my book. Don't hide what you are especially since others will find out and word travels fast in a small community.

The vetting process is important and the candidates aren’t the ones who tell all. So, just so we can all start on the same page, what public records did you search? City of Denver? Denver County? City of Edgewater? Jefferson County? State of Colorado? Someone’s District Court? Dexonline? The National Enquirer? There is a lot of public information out there. Where did you go?

Try LexisNexis or Intellius - or any other number of comprehensive sites. You can get all the information and then some for a small fee.

to be clear.I've spoken with the citizens who are involved in what we now have as a citizen watch program. They want it expanded and more effective. If you vote for me, I'll support these citizen efforts and work to make sure our City is utilizing the resources our citizens are trying, really hard, to make available.

A question, Devon.
If you are elected how do you propose to 'support' a citizen watch program? What are you going to do that council hasn't already done? This has come up before, council supports it, the police chief supports it and essentially, if the people don't want to do it it ain't going to get done.

The true sign of a naive candidate is this notion that a collection of unsupported words have value. The words are the easy part. The only part that counts is whether or not the idea can really be done. Failure is the norm because people think their words have value.
Great question!!!!!! What, exactly, are you going to do? Walk the streets? Bankroll the expenses? Perform the duties of block captain for 20-plus blocks? What are you going to do????????? And just what exactly do you think a COUNCIL PERSON can do??????

The last post was well written.
Under Chief Keough the crime rate is down and people are actually walking the streets at night. Yes there has been an awful lot of burglaries here but the PD has arrested many of the perpetrators. Neighborhood watch programs are way up. I also wonder what Devon plans. It's great that he was campaining to fix problems with the police and fire but then looks awfully foolish when the stuff he is trying to fix is already in place and working.
I guess Devon can get behind a new space for the cops and firemen. NOW that's an issue to run on.

Uh, too late. This issue was taken up by councilors Bossert and McElhany in the spring. A couple of ideas were looked into. When we got our new CM the process got put on hold until the finance department got worked out and a realistic plan could be brought forth. This, as I understand, was approved by the chief of police as well.
Oh, and Devon, the fire department space is also already on the burner.
Now what?

How about working just a 'tich bit harder?I can walk the town, and still figure out that we're renting the cop-shop, and that when someone breaks into my car (and 35+ others) it IS an issue that NO police officer stopped by to dust for prints. I could be wrong, but I'd be willing to lay a $50 on the fact that whoever busted up our people's cars probably has a record. In which case, we could bust 'em with just a little more work.
Direct question: how will I back up Community Watch? My plan is to sponsor a community forum, on how our citizens can support crime prevention in our community. Is there any reason our Police wouldn't want to attend such an event, and inform (and listen to) our citizens?
|
Guest

Devon,
Why would you have to be elected to council to sponsor a forum? And why couldn't any citizen call the city manager and ask that the police department do a more through job?

Devon: If you took the time to talk to the police or the Chief instead of going off halk cocked you might learn some things - I did. Most police Agencies who don't have a crime lab rely on CBI that's the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to process evidence like finger prints that are submitted. Car break in's have a low priority and as such it might take a year to process one set of prints. In addition most car break in's are done by kids who are not treated the same as adults and most don't have finger prints in the automated system.

Why all the insults like "going off half cocked"? Is that really necessary? Isn't it enough to know this particular candidate is concerned about car break- ins and would like to see what we can do to become more secure as a neighborhood? I like that idea and perhaps at a community forum we would ALL learn juvenile offenders may not be finger printed so what else can we do about car break- ins?
Why, we might learn from our knowledgeable police force a lot of information that would benefit us all, not just you or Devon - taking up our busy Police Chief's time...
There is much to know about crime prevention and knowing there is someone running for office who would like to adovate for that cause is enough. If you think that is a good cause for a Councilman, vote for Devon! At least we know one of the ideas he would like to work on if elected.

IT SOUNDS LIKE DEVON HAS A BONE TO PICK WITH THE CHIEF BECAUSE HE WAS A VICTIM OF A MINOR CRIME IN HIS LIFE LIKE MANY OF US. I HAD MY CAR BROKEN INTO AT MY OFFICE IN THE CITY OF DENVER AND WAS TOLD DENVER OFFICER'S DON'T RESPOND TO THOSE CRIMES ANYMORE. I WAS GIVEN A CHOICE OF THEM MAILING ME A FORM TO FILL OUT OR REPORTING IT ON- LINE. IF I HAD TO CHOOSE I WOULD TAKE OUR POLICE SERVICE ANYDAY. EITHER WAY IT'S JUST PART OF LIFE. I DON'T SEE HOW BOGGING DOWN CRIME LABS AND SPENDING THOUSANDS OF EXTRA DOLLARS WE DON'T HAVE JUST TO BUST SOME DELINQUENTS IS REALLY COST EFFECTIVE BUT THATS MY OPINION. DEVON WANTS TO CUT BUDGETS AND TRIM THE PUBLIC SAFETY BUDGET HOW CAN THAT HAPPEN IF HE ALSO WANTS COP'S TO DO EXTRA THINGS THAT THE CHIEF SAYS ARE NOT WORTH WHILE........... SEEMS KIND OF CONTRADICTORY TO ME BUT AGAIN JUST MY OPINION. WHY NOT LET THE CITY MANAGER AND THE CHIEFS DO THIER JOBS? CRIME IS DOWN, THE NEIGHBOORHOOD LOOKS MUCH BETTER, AND IT SEEMS TO BE WORKING.

What? For wanting to hold a public forum on crime prevention?
1. I doubt Devon blames the Chief because his car got broken into
2. Crime Prevention is a valid social topic and we can all learn how to better protect ourselves and our neighbors if we learn more.
3. Public education about crime prevention is one of the jobs of the Police Department.
PS all caps is so passe'...

I remember reading about this same subject years ago on the stick. If Devon was so concerned about crime prevention why didn't he start a neighborhood watch like many other citizens did?
I'll tell you why. He did not care enough then and only cares now because he needs the extra money a council seat would provide.
All his whineing is largely a waste of time because we have so many open slots, if he just stopped crying about it he might get elected. He is just making himself look foolish.
I look forward to someone defending him so go ahead and join him.

I HATE all caps, but sometimes there is a reason to be heard, and therefore a reason to raise your voice. I agree with the ALL-CAPS poster. Devon is grossly out of touch, and listening to a very small, and disgruntled segment of our community. To be concerned is one thing. To have the ability to identify, and implement a solution is another. Devon isn’t there yet. Maybe he sees the problem, but he is not capable of enacting a solution.
