When will we have a City Manager?

Is there a hire date or even a hire guess???
guest

When you ask? Deadline? Yes there's a deadline and it is far behind you on the calendar!
So, my hope is that when the clowns leave the tent and the rest choose to quit following a moron and actually DO something in city hall, maybe we'll have a manager. Maybe, if we are lucky enough to have leaders who will follow the charter.  Notice everything on the agenda is now listed for discussion and "possible" action? Only so it can get delayed 3, 7, 15 times or into eternity until there's too much "other" pressing business that it falls off the agenda forever!

Soon I hope! But don't be surprised if council starts talking about doing a new search....... this is becoming our tradition in government.
Tuning in

Are we getting a CM?

I am guessing that these last two posters have been only reading the stick for all of their information (and not even all of the stick or they would know the answers) or they would know that;
1. A search firm was hired to locate candidates for the city manager position.
2. 5 candidates were selected, met the public at a meet and greet in April, and the following day were interviewed by two panels. One panel consisted of city council, the mayor and the city attorney. It was moderated by one of the search firm managers.
The other panel was 3 city managers from other cities and the other manager from the search firm as a moderator - who also happened to be a city manager previously.
After all the interviews, the two panels met and discussed the interviews. Then the city council narrowed it down to two candidates. The first choice was asked, negotiations followed and the results will be announced this Thursday, May 21st, at city council. All will be revealed at that time.
Tonights the Night!!!

Edgewater's New City Manager is named tonight!

Excellent!!!

It sounds like "Tuning In" is tuned in.

NEW MANAGER

HAROLD STALF

Our new city manager is Harold Stalf. He will begin June 29th. It's a long wait, but not nearly as long as it has been to get to this point.
Let us all wish him well and rejoice that this city has committed to moving forward!

More on "HJ"

I decided to Google our new City Manager, as I am sure many of you have. This is what I've come up with so far. The more I read the more enthusiastic I feel. "HJ" might just be a lot of fun as a City Manager. Far from a cloistered bureaucrat, he's apparently quite an artsy guy. Cool!

Anyone have any information or thoughts to share?

This is interesting. He has done a lot of work in the Denver area before moving to Grand Junction.

I agree with his philosophy that a community needs business and resturants to stay open late night.  This is becomming a young community and we need the night time draw.  Day time is good but at night the streets are dead.   We need a waffle house and some night time activity other than the cooler.  Bring a popular nightclub in and watch the local business like Mc'donalds and Taco bell flourish.  King Soopers and the fast food industry have really suffered since table steaks left.

16 days to go!

June 29th - We are in the home stretch!

I am so excited for Edgewater! The long awaited City Manager will be here in 16 days!!!
Maybe we should start a topic of questions for the new CM here so he isn't bombarded with phone calls when he arrives. He does know about the Talking Stick, doesn't he?
15 days to go!

HJ
You ought to consider relocating your home in Edgewater.  You really can't appreciate the town till you have lived here.  Something to do with the water I suspect.
Like to bike

danger, danger...

I disagree HJ, you are going to need all the objectivity and wide angle view you can get. Work here, but don't live here. You'll end up on Newland and it will be all over...
What would you think about a system of bike trails (in cooperation with Lakewood) to be able to bike to the light rail stop? Can we start to plan for that now?
Walking The Dog

Don't listen to them HJ.  We need pedestrian trails and a dog park.
$$$

We need a balanced budget
communications

We need a functional and professional website that works, informs us and shows our city in a professional light. Ours is often nonfuctional and "partial" at best.   I think it's been "under construction" for over two years.
Guest

Ditto that!  Our website is an embarassament.  The police department's site is nice.
Me too

HJ, we need youth programs.  We need a cohesive plan for the Heritage Center.  We need to rethink and redo the alley paving program from Harlan West.
Mr. Robinson

I have one word for you HJ, cattails.  The future is in cattails.  Big, very big.
Not the Pro

$that's why he is making the big bucks$

...but seriously folks...right now the last thing our first city manager needs is a bunch of personal hot buttons on his plate.  Rather that us trying to steer him in ‘the right’ direction I want to see what he sees needs to be done.  I’d suggest we all take a deep breath, sit back, watch, listen and learn.  And then only after he has spoken do we open our mouths.

We have a Pro, we don't need an idea cop.

A Pro knows never to entirely believe anyone or take as gospel anything anyone says when he first arrives in a new situation. I'm sure he also knows just because the community is sharing with him their needs, dreams, concerns and desires that just by saying them out loud doesn't mean they have landed on his plate.
Of course he will make his own assessment. That doesn't mean we can't freely express ourselves here!
A Pro doesn't need the kind of protection you suggest he needs. He will hear it anyway. He may as well hear it here and from ALL of us.
So, who appointed you the idea cop?
He'll take his time and eventually decide who to trust, who is intelligent and thoughtful and who is ah, not so much. He will discover who is being political or controlling or manipulative. He's seen it all before.
Go ahead Edgewater, express yourself! I'll bet he's listening and there is something to be said for the idea that no one knows Edgewater better than the people who live here.
Just keep in mind, Edgewater's issues probably exist other places. A new perspective and a new set of eyes, especially the eyes of a professional will be great. Don't let anyone dampen your enthusiasm, especially by trying to tell you you are foolish for sharing your ideas. You are absolutely not. Sharing ideas is very different than "telling" someone what to do about them. Respect where respect is due. If we knew all the answers and how to execute them we wouldn't have needed to hired a Pro.
Mr. Robinson

Tust me on this one HJ, the future is in cattails.

Way to shoot down an opinion, Guest!  I guess some ideas are just better than others.
Guest

Not the point, Oblio

I disagreed, I don't recall shooting anyone. In fact, the idea of giving HJ room is fine with me it was the quote I objected to.
Quote:
"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt"

The idea of squelching the sharing of ideas because they may be somehow "unworthy" is what I  disagreed with. So, in this case, the idea squelch-er got squelched. That seems only fair.
No one got "shot down" but someone did challenge the premise that the ideas of the residents of this community may be considered foolish.
Some ideas are better than others, but when you are brainstorming ideas you write them ALL down first and then you pick the best ones.
It's the same notion as there are no stupid questions. It's called tolerance and respect for the opinions of others.
No matter, the damage is already done. Except for cattails, I doubt anyone will post their ideas now.
Way to silence the topic Guest2.
So, I guess that makes you the winner.
Mr. Robinson

HJ,
Along with the cattails we might consider implementing our Tree Master Plan and improve Edgewaters carbon footprint.  Then there is the Police Station issue, our cops need a new home as does our Fire Department.  I don't think locating these facilities on the same block as an elementary and a high school is such a great idea.
Asking

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t it the city manager’s job to do what council wants and council’s job to do what the people want?  Shouldn’t ideas be communicated to council?  Wouldn’t it be bad to have a city manager behind the political policy making?
Guest

correction

A HUGE part of the City Manager's job description is to advise Council because he is the one with the expertise, whereas Council members are lay citizens without expertise in municipal management.
It is entirely appropriate for the community to communicate with the CM and it is entirely appropriate for the CM to teach, coach, advise, recommend, etc. to Council regarding any legislation they are considering.
After Council enacts legislation the CM is also the one who will oversee it's implementation.
So, no it is not a one way street. It is a round-about.

How about a new Police Building that's not owned by a Bar!!!!
Observer

Old Voting Records Never Die

You mean the police station that was sold to the owner's of a bar because the City Council, at the time, voted unanimously to sell it to the bar? That one?

How do we know some City Council down the road won't sell this one too???? Maybe if former Councilperson's McCloskey, and Hale get re-elected to Council they will!!!

Anyone know how to get off this merri-go-round?
I know...

City Manager

City Manager, City Manager, City Manager, I hope.
Guest

Did you ever think that maybe former Councilperson's McCloskey, and Hale are not running for Council or Mayor?  Besides if they did run it wouldn't be a re-election, they aren't incumbents.
Observer

Old Voting Records Never Die

However, nice bit of semantics there, I stand corrected.
Former Councilpersons McCloskey, and Hale, if they run, would not be considered reelected but merely elected, again...
Guest

I think John should run I like his style
Guest

Leanna never elected

Leanna Hale was never elected. She got on as an appointment and then she got bumped into another councilpersons 4 year slot when they left council. Lots of todo on that one. There was even a lawsuit because the councilman that was already on council in a 2 year spot felt he should have bumped up to a 4 year slot. Leanna was suddenly in a 4 year spot that the citizens never got a choice in the decision. How wrong is that?
What Ever

That is why we rewrote the Charter, not that this Council is any better at interpreting or implementing it.  Things are better with Cooke gone though.  Can't wait for B McNulty to take over the Council, that should prove interesting.  I guess they will all go home at 8:15.  Better yet they will hold council meetings at 11:00 AM and dispense with keeping minutes.
Guest

Well, we finally got some thoughts posted.....and some good thoughts at that.

This one made me stop and think:
Quote:
I think John should run I like his style”

As for my self, I didn’t disagree with much of his thougts, but I thought his style was awful.  It was tough agreeing with a man that I distained......but I did like much of what he said.

Quote:
Things are better with Cooke gone though.

I agree here hands down.  Cooke’s style was condescending and his goals seemed to be self oriented.  Some will argue that he had the community’s best interest at heart, but I didn’t see it.  To his credit he did bring better process into Edgewater’s government, and for that I do give thanks.  But that was achieved early on and I could have done without the last few years of pompous legal speak.  I just hope the current council representatives have enough self to step up and do their job without leaning on Cooke as their back-seat-driver.
Guest

oh really?

You liked former Councilman McCloskey shouting down elderly women in the parking lot or using the body language of his intimidating height to silence people who might dare disagree with him? How about when he used to lean way back in his chair, put his feet up on his Council desk and sigh into the microphone to let people know how unimpressed he was with what they were saying?
Ah yes, and how about that sarcastic sneer of a smile? Yeah, that looked like "community" to me.
Style points? Really?
Isn't it amazing how the mind tends to block the bad memories and remember a far more rosy past?  Devisive personalities are the absolute worst thing that can happen to a City Council and  attempts to control through intimidation are one of the worse forms of devisivness.
Oh well, that's history and there is no accounting for taste. I guess Edgewater likes to be treated like that. I'll never understand it but suit yourself.
I do think there is a lot of untapped talent in this town who would do a better job, in a kinder way. I hope they are listening and decide to help out their community...
Guest

John's a cowboy and his style will be remembered like John Wayne.
Guest

Hopefully the new manager will do something with the new treasurer who can't manage to do anything right.  I guess u get what u pay for huh.
Guest

John Wayne?

Oh PLEASE!
McCloskey remembered like John Wayne? What an insult to John Wayne!
He is a bully, a cheat, a liar, a racist, a sexist and an ass to the nth degree.
I sure hope people remember the way he was on council before they elect him to any post.
Guest

You don't like him?  Just another reason to vote for John M for council or Mayor.
Atta Boy

Now that’s the way to vote!  Has nothing to do with the candidate or the issues, you got to bring down the people you don’t like. My vote is strictly based on who is supporting what.  If someone I don’t like is going one way, I’m going the other - period!
right on

John's a good guy!  Sorry you don't like him but it appears other do that's America.
easy

It ain't that easy.  The problem is you can never tell where any of 'em are going or what they actually support. They say one thing and do something else or they say one thing to your face and tell the next guy the exact opposite. I'm not just saying this, this is experience talkin'.

So...when you don't know what they support you are left with an assessment of their honesty and character.

but...then they get elected, it goes to their head and you lose the only quality you voted for, their character

it's hopeless, Vote For John Wayne, Vote for Elmer Fud

it's all the same damn thing
Patriot

Someone voted for Obama.  Oh well.  That's the way the wind blows with representative government.  What can I say?
Guest

Do you like your postman going Postal?

If you do, vote McCloskey. If you don't but you think you like McC's "style" get a copy of the tape of his Council farewell speech and antics from the Clerk's office. The man proved himself to be a lunatic all the way through - no pretense there!
And comparing this "cowboy" to John Wayne is in the same vein as comparing George Bush to a military veteran. Both men are all hat and no cattle, as they say in the real West. And McC's hat is screwed on way too tight!
Guest

John's a patriot and a proud supporter of the Jeffco Westernairs.
Guest

and he should keep doing what he's good at

riding horses and saluting the flag, but as a community leader, he's a sidewinder and he doesn't belong in our City government.
High Horse

John's a patriot and a proud supporter of the Jeffco Western

Douglas MAcArthur was a patriot and a proud horseman, too, and look what Truman found it necessary to do to contain his "high spirits". NO ONE doubts McC's patriotism and his love of horses, take that as a given. That he is more Custer - or Chivington, maybe - than Roosevelt is the problem. EW needs more diplomacy and less saber-rattling, and the current times demand more introspection than BIG JOHN has shown us.

John - stay the course on your postal route. Show up as a CITIZEN and give your input to Council. Your descent from somewhere slightly short of Olympus to grace the citizens with your wisdom would be neither timely nor wise until you present yourself publicly, week after week, to comment on City conditions and Council responses. To do otherwise would be to unethically conceal yourself from public view with the hopes of the Citizens forgetting your embarrassing performance at your Council farewell. If you've changed, improved, had an Epiphany, show it week in and week out from the Public Comments side of the aisle before trying to leap the podium to your former position.
Guest

Can anyone give us an idea of his farewell speech? Most of us cannot get to the clerks office before they close.
Thanks.
Guest

It's public record

and it is on tape
maybe the City Clerk could arrange a time after business hours for you to listen to it at City Hall - ask her. Maybe a Thursday evening?
It's impossible to describe. You should listen and draw your own opinion.
Guest

Parts of it included accusations of illegal doings by the then current mayor.  I hear Mr. McCloskey might be interviewing for the CRCC.  This commission sounds like his cup of tea.

Who cares!  We have a new City Manager now, let's move forward instead of living in the past.  Squash the Ice Ranch failure and lets make Edgewater a destination City.   We need entertainment to bring in revenue 24 /7.   Look at how successfull our July 3rd show is and the numbers it attracts.  After 9:00 p.m. Edgewater Rolls up unless you want to buy groceries and few do that anymore.  Get some late night businesses like a blues club and a waffle house.  Those late night businesses will fuel King Soopers and the fast food shops and provide much more revenue.  We need a 24 hour revenue stream instead of a 9 to 9

Mr. Stalf, we have faith in you.
Guest

The End of an Era

Let Mr. Stalf do his job, his way with the creative control he needs.

Don't tell him about waffle houses and blues clubs (like McCloskey tried to railroad high density housing) and then expect him to do your concept of what Edgewater needs.

Let go.

We worked hard to get Mr. Stalf now let him do what he knows how to do and stay out of his way, please. Enjoy your quiet, cozy little houses in your peaceful neighborhoods and remember what you own and control extends to the sidewalk, you have no proprietary interest in an area 5 or 7 blocks away. You exhibit absolutely no concern or empathy for the people who live down here, that is evident. I'm sure there are decisions to be made and and not everyone will be entirely happy however I have far more confidence that they will be made in an ethical and professional manner if our new City Manager is allowed creative control.

Let go. Go live your life, enjoy the peace on your treelined street...

You should try living ‘down here’.  Jonny’s loud music, drunk people smoking on the street talking VERY VERY LOUD...  can’t even get a full night’s sleep in my own house anymore and you want more late night businesses with live music.  Guess you guys ‘up there’ don’t need to worry bvout getting up to go to work.
Why not

I guess you find all the section 8 rentals more appealing than a revenue producing business.  Why don't you invest in the Human Services building the Mayor had planned.
Guest

So your saying that Edgewater’s only hope for revenue is businesses that keep the neighbors awake at night?
pop goes the weasle

Johnny's usually has about two peoplel in it until close at 8 pm.  I doubt it's the hot spot you claim it is.  I would bet thier out of business in 6 months.
Guest

Hmmm

after Jonny's it's Shmonny's, so what's your point?
Guest

take it easy

The Ice Ranch either will start construction in August or they will eventually turn the property back to the City.
Council had a shot at it. If The Ice Ranch falls through it's back to square one.
However, Council's turn as amateur visionaries is over.
We are paying a professional's salary for professional quality work this time.
I understand that banks are loosening up a little, maybe they will still build their ice rink. No one knows.
In the meantime, other places are using stimulus money in some great ways.
Everyone might as well relax, lean back and watch it all unfold.
I do hope some thought is given to those who are trying to live down here. Just in the last year the noise levels have increased substantially and I feel for the guy who can't get enough sleep.
Remember that quaint little neighborhood grocery store we all thought we were moving in next to?
Wow, how long ago was that? What a bad dream.
Sack Time

Where is the stimulus money working?  I don't see it doing much of anything except lining the pockets of special interest.  The Colfax paving project is costing 27 million dollars and employed a wopping 16 people extra for 6 months. (woopie) your tax dollars at work.   What else has the great Obama done except read a teleprompter?  Not much !  I think even the biased media love fest is coming to an end.  It's Go Time.
Guest

Thanks...

the preceding was an unpaid political announcement by an escapee of the "National Politics" forum - conservative side -
wow, you can't even mention public funding or they are all over you like a cheap suit!
don't you have a Limbaugh show to listen to or something? Geez
oh, and I assume you won't be watching the fireworks tomorrow either as that was paid with public funds.
Patriot

I didn't say nuthin.  Everything is just rosey.
Guest

Not you, Patriot?

Gosh, there must be more than one conservative in Edgewater.
The stimulus money for infastructure projects has just begun to arrive on a state level. It will be very interesting to see what impact it has. I sure hope it helps. Keep your fingers crossed, things are getting kind of dicey.
I won't dignify The President bashing with a response except to say I don't think it is fair to rewrite history like that. He didn't make this mess, he inherited it. This mess took a long, long time to make and it's going to take longer than 6 months to dig out. The jury is still out on President Obama's performance, as it should be. It isn't history yet.

Good to hear all is rosy, Patriot! Have a nice 4th.
Guest

Has the new Manager voiced comment about how he will try and improve our business district?  I am especially concerned because we have no recreation at night except the cooler and it's loud headbanging rock.  I would like to see a nice blues club and pancake house or something along this lines.
Oppertunity

The ex-Johnny’s is closed.  Maybe you could invest in a business venture that offers blues and pancakes.

So 9/11 wasn't Bushes fault along with the Afghan and Iraq war.  That stuff was a long time coming too.
I know, wrong thread.  Blues and pancakes, hmmmm.  I like it.
Bongo

The most entertainment in this City is provided a couple of hours a night on the weekends by the custom frame shop across from Johnny's.  The owner plays a mean bass guitar and his friends can sure jam.  I don't know if it's legal but they pack the sidewalk.

I just love true art

Ditto!  His name is Brian and he has single handily raised Edgewater’s bohemian factor.

Thanks Brian!
