Urban Planning? What urban planning?

So, City Council decided to blow up thousands of dollars on the 3rd of July.
Bike paths, picnic tables, better bus stops, kids stuff, workout equipment, a volleyball court. a basketball court. It could have been a lot of things but it's gone now. Poof! Up in smoke.
Oh well, there will be fun parties. No one will be disappointed. The tradition will live on. Thanks Edgewater residents for helping to make this the recreational and cultural desert that it is. Enjoy your whiz, pop, bang. I'm taking my dog and heading for the mountains.
Hang in There

Your point is well received by many.  And if it helps, the vote was close - 4 to 3.  Some of those opposed were very, very strongly opposed.  There is still hope that we can move toward a better goal.

Can't please everyone all the time.

Why is it an either/or situation? Why can there not be both the fireworks, but then also work on bike paths, programs, etc.? There is plenty of open space money.
concerned, too

In a few months a city manager will be working for the city. He or she will be there to hear all of us when we say: We need recreational programs for the entire population. All of council has said this is a priority. They'll be working on this.

Don't be silent, let the new manager know how you feel. I certainly will. We need programs. Good programs. You're right, we have money in open space dollars for programs. Don't give up.

I don't know if you were at any of the council meetings, but there was much citizen support and always has been for the fireworks. We can do both. Have tradition and recreational programs. I think it'll happen sooner than later.

I can agree with this- although - not having all the details- I find it hard to swallow the percentage increase needed for safety factors to the tune of 30K+ for a total package price when really the "rumors of a lost finger" or the problems with the traffic flow, lights and light posts were the worst that Edgewater has encountered during this event.

But there was GREAT public support to keep a long-standing tradition going! The citizens spoke, despite being told by president  Cooke that he didn't care to hear from them in chambers, yet apparently were heard.  Not sure who voted Y/N, but thanks to those of you who opened your ears, eyes and minds - to allow this traditional event that so many of us love and appreciate (and appreciate the VFD for doing) to continue.  I hope the show is more spectacular than ever with lots of joyful spectators, neighbors, friends, vendors and maybe a band before the event starts?

It's a high price tag for "traffic flow"- in my opinion. But maybe that is because I have lived in cap hill where you are lucky to find a parking spot 5 blocks from your house on a normal day....and from one who is used to sitting in "exit traffic" from sporting events and concerts frequently.....but I do support safety, but fall back on the phrase "moderation is key" folks.
In the end, I am pleased to see council vote (even on a close vote) to keep a FINE tradition going on in Edgewater!

I also agree with concerned that we need better programming for our youth and greater community. There are open space funds, but best to plan ahead and spend them wisely. Some projects cost much more than you might imagine and having some $ in store for the future is not a bad idea!

I hope the issues with the P/R Board and director get worked out quickly and the Board once again becomes viable and active,  viewed as a useful, beneficial entity that it has been, and has the support of the City it serves...

And let's get some baby swings in this town- while I'm at it! (even though mine are passed that stage)
Jay

I agree with a previous poster that there is plenty of open space funds for both.  As for 30 K,  I think if were going to have the show and I am glad we are lets make it as safe as possible.  30 K is nothing comapred to the life of a child getting ran over by Sheridan traffic because we had no one to slow it down.  Good job and thanks to Chief Keough.

I feel the same way about trees.  If one child gets hurt or killed climbing trees, then cut down all the trees I say!

On the record

At the Council meeting where they approved the funds for the fireworks out of Open Space funds Councilman Adam Gardner stated he would fund raise for a July 3rd fireworks display in 2010, instead of taking the money out of Open Space. Council President David Cooke said he would help him raise the money. I hope they were sincere.
All of you who came to Council and asked for the fireworks, I hope you will help as well.
The Open Space funds should now be used for more substantive, on-going programs for our youth, our seniors and the general population, in my opinion. Let's stop running to Open Space when we get strapped for cash and begin to plan for the responsible use of this fund to establish a solid Parks and Recreation program for Edgewater.

Was the pledge for 2010 or to recover the costs for 2009?

Fireworks funding

I was under the impression that the money was coming out of Open Space this year but  this would be the last year that would happen, instead they would fund raise for the event. I may have misunderstood.
Does anyone else remember?

I would email Adam Gardner, and ask for clarification or ask at a council meeting

Anyone know why the Parks and Rec director is working for the ERA on city time?
Guest

dunno

Does it have something to do with Parks, maybe???

Not a park, just a parking lot.  Maybe the ERA was impressed with the landscape job around City Hall.  Anyone drive by the intersection of 24th & Ames?  I had to swerve to miss all the landscape boulder in the street.  Way to go Light Switch Lady.

Fireworks funding

This topic is about how do we pay for our annual July 3rd. fireworks and how we are going to pay for it next year not about taking pot shots at the Parks and Rec. Director. Please, make your own topic if  that is what you need to post about. Councilman Gardner did say he would fund raise for next year so let's keep this topic open and watch for progress with his fund raising.

Actually this thread is about URBAN PLANNING.  WHAT URBAN PLANNING?  Perhaps it is you who needs to start a new thread.
I have new name for 24th & Ames, Rocky Road.

Apparently our little 4-wheeler can’t read.  The issue of discussion is, and should stay, as it was started by the original poster.  As a reminder, the thread began with:

And what does fireworks have to do with Urban Planning?  There is already a thread called July 4th Fireworks under Government.  Actually the Light Box Lady was thinking outside the box.  She not only landscaped City Hall but she also created a new youth program.  What young boy doesn't like to throw rocks?
Stick to the topic

Off topic

I believe the convention is to respond to the content of the post NOT the subject line. In this case, the content of the post relates to the expense of fireworks compared to other urban plannng projects. So, I do believe you are off topic. You can always create one, everyone else does.
4WD in EW

OK, I can do that.  I just hope for $35,000 the Light Box Lady remembers to turn on the lights when the fireworks show is over.  Guess I'll have to write an article for the HUB saying the Edgewater fireworks show is back on, we wouldn't want the Light Box Lady to look like a liar.
Guest

This 'light box lady' thing is getting a little childish, don't you think?
Please let it go.

Dude, it was expressly requested by the people paying for this little shin-dig that it was not to be put in the papers.  You trying to ruin the event by going to the HUB are you just blinded by some kind of rage?

Credibility

I saw the article in the HUB that said we cancelled the July 3rd "shindig" and EW Daze.  Now the "shindig" is back on.  Credibility has to count for something doesn't it?  What are all of those Denver, Lakewood and Wheat Ridge people going to think when they see the fireworks going off over Edgewater on July 3rd?  It's not like we can hide it.  Well, they are going to think that we are just plumb unneighborly.  Next thing you know, they won't shop here or eat at our hamburger joints or get drunk at Sloans or buy EW Inn Pizza.  Then they will stop mutual assist with our PD & FD.  The bums will stop coming over from the lake and W. Colfax (got to lose the good and the bad).  They will stop sending their kids to our schools and they won't allow all of those Edgewater kids to open enroll in their schools.
Credibility, it is everything.

Let it go. We'll spread the work locally. That is adequate.

And now we are not going to leave nonresidents work here?  Now that is real isolationism.

Oh for heavens sakes, I made a typo.  I meant word not work

we'll spread the word here, it it our city function, after all!
Right ON

Maybe we could rent some of that really cool riot gear from the Denver PD that they got for the DNC.  Eight Edgewater cops hanging off the running board of a tricked out Chevy Suburban all decked out in SWAT gear.  How cool is that!

Rather than being nice and throwing an ice cream party for the crazy, we decided to poke him with a stick instead.

Sorry, it won’t happen again.

Not if we all keep it secret.    The outsiders don't have to know until it's almost over.  I promise not to tell anyone about our special party.  It's a community executive session.

Basketball Hoops?

Speaking of Urban Projects are there any outside basket ball courts that the kids can play at this summer? Are they allowed to use the ones at the schools?
Do we have anywhere to play soccer or T-ball?

This is a thread about fireworks not kids.  Stay on topic please .
Care Bear

I don't care about the TOPIC.  It's a valid question and I will do my best to answer it.  I can't speak for the schools but I have seen kids using the outdoor BB courts after school hours.  There are some BB courts at Walker Branch.  Since the permanent softball fence went up at Citizens Park it is no longer a viable place for soccer, maybe there is some space on the South end of Walker Branch.  As for T-ball you might be able to use the field at Citizens Park but if it is an organized event you would have to go through the Parks & Recreation Director.  We have several public playgrounds located in Citizens Park, Walker Branch Park and as I understand Lumberg Elementary School.  There is Dodge Ball activity at Jefferson High on Saturday evenings the last I heard.  Other than that, there are no organized youth athletic activities offered by the City of Edgewater.  There are several such programs offered by Lakewood and Wheat Ridge that accept Edgewater's children.  Little League, Midget Football, T-ball and Soccer.
Hope this helps.
