Topic on Kids Activities

I don't care about the TOPIC.  It's a valid question and I will do my best to answer it.  I can't speak for the schools but I have seen kids using the outdoor BB courts after school hours.  There are some BB courts at Walker Branch.  Since the permanent softball fence went up at Citizens Park it is no longer a viable place for soccer, maybe there is some space on the South end of Walker Branch.  As for T-ball you might be able to use the field at Citizens Park but if it is an organized event you would have to go through the Parks & Recreation Director.  We have several public playgrounds located in Citizens Park, Walker Branch Park and as I understand Lumberg Elementary School.  There is Dodge Ball activity at Jefferson High on Saturday evenings the last I heard.  Other than that, there are no organized youth athletic activities offered by the City of Edgewater.  There are several such programs offered by Lakewood and Wheat Ridge that accept Edgewater's children.  Little League, Midget Football, T-ball and Soccer.
Hope this helps.

Hope the mods don't mind my attempt to redirect this topic. Please delete my screwup in the 'what urban planning?' topic. I tried to copy to a new topic and ended up copying to the same topic.

OK - my thoughts on this topic about kids activities.
It isn't going to happen with the current P&R director unless we get a new manager to direct her. Actually, I'm hoping that the new manager will redirect her - to another city as someones assistant. She is simply not prepared to be a department head yet. I think that in time, she could be. But not yet. And it's not fair to our children that they are the ones that have to pay for her inexperience. These kids are young for such a short time. They don't have time to wait for her to learn. They need someone who can produce quality childrens programs now.
The current mayor is not doing her job in directing the P&R director. I don't know what she has in mind, but it surely isn't our cities children.
Go to city hall on April 30th and meet the candidates for the city manager. Ask them about their experience and thoughts on a proper P&R program. Let them know that this is important to the citizens.

Always play to your strengths

While I appreciate the concerns expressed by the above poster I would chide her/him to not be so quick with judging others. Remember there are always two sides to every story. We all have to want a Parks and Recreation Program, both the administrative and legislative branches of our City Government need to be committed and supportive of the beginning of this program and of each other. If you judge people they are reticent to communicate with you and that simply doesn't help move things forward.
By means of a reality check, a new City Manager is going to have a lot to do before attention can be turned to Parks and Rec. and summer is coming so we may still be on our own for awhile here. Let's see what we can get accomplished if everyone suspends the finger pointing and focuses only on progress.
Please?

Quick to judge? How long has this director been here? I would say there is nothing quick about her programming. That's for sure.
As for the legislative side , why would the city put money into the hands of someone who has proven that she only wastes it and doesn't have a clue how to use it appropriately? It's amazing that her salary made it to the budget.

This is the kind of intolerant and judgmental behavior and attitude that has cost this city it’s sense of community and pride.  Undoubtedly you are both on council.

Group Process 101

Collaboration, co-operation, non-judgemental attitudes are essential skills for good group process.

Active listening is far more difficult and far more constructive than talking.

Asking how can I help, instead of assigning blame is obviously more helpful and effective.

I'm just saying...
Boo Bear

You mean like the P&R Board that worked so hard to assist the Director only to be slapped in the face.  Of the original four that put together the Master Tree Plan, only one is still on the board and the arborist quit.  Now why is it these people could work with the arborist on the tree plan but could not work with the P&R Director on childrens programs?  I think we all know the reason.
New Faces

Because two of the four were tyrants.  When they didn’t get there way they got busy making with the blame game.  I hear the board has a new chair.  Maybe things will get better.
Much ado about nothing

Do you even know what the word tyrant means?
Merriam Websters Collegiate Dictionary Tenth Edition:  tyrant  1 a: an absolute ruler unrestrained by law or constitution  b: a usurper of sovererignty  2 a: a ruler whoexercises absolute power oppressively or brutally  b: one resembling an oppresive ruler in the harsh use of authority or power
I hardly think either of the the former two members of the P&R Board fit that description.  Indeed they were attempting to comply with the once Charter madated duties of the P&R Board.  Those duties have not been changed by ordinance of Council and still exist whether the P&R Director or Mayor likes it or not.  The P&R Director on the other hand wants absolute control over the P&R Board and that would be a violation of Charter (constitution).  So, who really is the tyrant?
Change is a good thing and the Board is now changed.  Give the new members a chance to settle in and select their leaders and see where we go from here.  I hope the lame duck Mayor is not trying to pull to many strings.

Yep, 2(b) works perfectly.  ‘one resembling an oppressive ruler in the harsh use of authority or power’.  Constantly attempting site an ordinance to force the mayor to request the board to do a master plan, and trying to force the mayor to engage the board with the budget was indeed a harsh attempt at gaining power.  The governing ordinance had three duties of the board, all at the request of the mayor.  The third duty was never pursued by the ‘old’ board.  Instead the other two were selectively use to create contentious talking point.  I suppose that since the actual status of ruler was never achieved the word tyrant might be a stretch, but they sure resembled one.
More ado about nothing

Just because the Mayor is inept at doing her duty does not mean that a well intentioned Board was some how oppressive.  They were just eager to do their duty.  I don't see where reviewing a budget or updating a P&R Master Plan is a tyrannical act, I see that as meeting responsibility.
All in the eye of the beholder I suppose.
not all just a couple

no one was talking about the board as a whole
More ado about nothing

Neither was I.  I was speaking specifically to the last two Chair Persons.  Before them the Board did absolutley nothing, which I suspect may be the Boards future.  Lets not forget that they are also the Tree Commission, which is fully under Councils control.  Of course if the Charter was being followed the Board should be assigned to Council or the Manager not the Mayor even though she (the Mayor) is "acting" City Manager, for now.
Yeah Right

Isn't that why we have ordinances and Charters and such?   To be followed?  Or are our ordinances and Charter just recommendations for anarchist and tyrants to ignor  Think I'll begin driving down W. 25th at 75 MPH.  After all it's just a political recommendation.
Thank you Care Bear

Yes! This helps.

A reminder that this topic is about kids activities.
Care Bear posted some good information to someone who asked a question about it. Thank you, Care Bear.

That seems to be a problem in the den.  Way to many politics and not enough honey.  I love honey.  Politics, not so much.
Honey Good!

Honey Bears and Busy Bees

We have enough real problems finding ways to deliver activities for our young people. Let's problem solve, not politics solve.
Besides, I hear you catch more bees with honey. We need lots of bees working on this issue. Happy, positive, busy bees. Bilingual bees would be especially helpful!
I recently read a report about our community. I would like to share  some of it with TS readers so everyone knows what our community looks like demographically and what the challenges are when you begin to talk about how to deliver a community recreation program.
Maybe if we put our heads together we will come up with some ideas.
I'll be posting more in the near future.
