How about letting the city manager settle in, evaluate everything, and do what he is supposed to do?

A nice steak house and strip bar sounds good to me. Go Diamond ! I think a forum like this is good because it does not force anything on the manager. Nothing wrong with suggestions.

The manager has had a month to settle in. If he doesn't have a feel for the landscape yet then Council made a bad choice. If he is going to be the City Manager and the Executive Director of the ERA he better be on his toes.

I think that the manager should read the talking stick and make a quick choice, like a candy cane factory as soon as possilbe. Just kidding. This person should wait at least 3 months to make any choice so they can go through what is real and what is here/say. But I do like the ice rink.

Nah. I like the damn girlie beer joint. An Old Crow distillery would be even better, hell yes.
Am I the onliest one smelling that damn skunk out there. Damn thing ate all my turnups the other night and then sprayed Old Blue. The Misses made me and Old Blue sleep in the garage with the foxes fer two nights. What's this town comin to? Hell if I know, foxes and polcats indeed! Lets see that new fangled manager do sumpthin about that situation. Hell yes!

skunk no more

Well, Ed, there's a dead skunk on 20th east of Harlan. One down, how many to go? Poor little critter Someone ran the little stinker down. The City Manager can concentrate on important stuff again.

A large brewery with live music where the Ice Ranch was to be built would be a great entertainment draw.

Why does everyone assume that the Ice Ranch is up for grabs?
And for krisakes - let the CM get to know the city before he starts rearranging it. He seems like a smart guy. I doubt he will be jumping in feet first on anything.

Why should we, the Stickians, be expected to change just because we have a City Manager? I'm sure that if HJ monitors the TS, he takes it all with a grain of salt.
OK, now how about NASCAR track, that would be awesome. VROOOM, VROOOM! How about it HJ? Should we take it to the wall?

I think he's a very smart guy and a very smart guy should be able to size up this City in a day. I'm sure he did his homework long before he actually got hired so I'm not concerned. This is a suggestion forum and who knows if he even reads it. Don't get so wound up over what's on the stick ! At least if he does read it, he will have some idea about what some people want if the Ice Ranch fails. (Odds are it will fail). That gives him even more time to size things up.

Any one know how much money the city paid out on studies, consultants, attorneys, appraisals and the like for the Ice Ranch?

Probably more than the City Attorney paid to take Council to a ball game.

Seriously, the attorney (and his whole team) is WAY above all this petty bickering and political BS.
Never should a decent and kind jester, from a moral and good man, be dragged into Edgewater’s political crap. Shame on ANYONE who has questioned Thad’s intention!
Only an A$$, with some kind of delusional vision of political ideological, would even be capable of presuming an alterative motive behind the good hearted jester behind the American tradition, affectionate immortalized by the words “Take me out to the ball game.”
Kudos to Thad, and shame on any AH who interprets the jester as something so vial as to warrant the refusal of the gift. If you pay for it, it isn’t a gift.
If you are incapable of differentiating the difference between a gift and bribe, than God please shelter the general public from your intolerable retort on ‘public interest.’ You obviously have no clue what the words ‘public representation’ means.

I would like to see a drive inn theatre on the ice ranch property. Bring Edgewater back to it's roots. Put the property on a ten year lease and at least we will have something instead of a broke down building. Hell, with technology they dont even need those old metal posts and speakers anymore, just tune your radio and your in. Call it the Lakeshore Drive Inn.

Well hell, if we are going to ignore the point and focus on the spelling skills, or lack there of, of Stickians, did you notice the 'alterative motive' comment? What is 'alterative'?

'We' are talking about someone with a petty gripe who seems to go out of her way to look for trouble. The attorney explained very well about his intentions and the laws that allow it.
A little comraderie amongst government and city officials is not a bad thing. It's about time that someone tried to bring our city leaders together. There has been way too much infighting and very little progress.
FYI - It was not just council - it was the mayor, the city manager and the department heads as well, that were invited.

I remember an open records request. I don't remember anyone going to Council or even making a big deal about this on the Stick. Indeed most of the citizens of Edgewater are still unaware of the event. If it was so right, why did someone have to file an open records request. Could it be they did not want the public to know about it? Is this what we want from our public officials? Is Edgewater up for sale? Are we going to issue contracts to the firm that takes our officials out to the finest dinners or the biggest sporting and cultural events. That's exactly the kind of abuse Amendment 41 of the State Constitution was supposed to have stopped.
The fact that the invite included all of the policy makers of Edgewater is even more disturbing to me.

Because that’s what people of drama do. It was a petty gripe with no merit but an open record’s request makes it sound like something big. Wow, maybe someone should call the CRCC.
|
Guest
|
Or the open records request was simply to see what was not visible to the public. Something that should be visible to the public. If there is nothing to hide then why is it hidden? The City recieves open records requests all the time. Why should this one be any different? Why should we condemn the requester for making the inquirey if all was on the up and up? Has a complaint been filed with the CRCC? One does have to question why Council has been on the defense. So much so, they held an executive session regarding this issue, over a simple open records request. The documents were released. Have you seen them posted here on the Stick? No? Then what is the problem? Unless there is something more. Is there something more? Something still unseen or heard? Or perhaphs it is just a case of "It is the City’s express intent to set high standards of ethical conduct that at all times honor the public’s
trust and avoid even the appearance of impropriety "

The Spanish InquisitionMaybe you should just weight down everyone on the City Staff and the Council and ALL the other pesky policy makers and dunk them in a large vat of water and see if they float. If they don't you can burn them at the stake (or bring them before the CRCC). Happy now?

We know the City Attorneys gift to the Policy Makers and their guests was legal. He told us so, or so we are told. So lets take a little different perspective on this wonderful gift..........a fiscal perspective.
You the tax payer, pay your municipal taxes dutifully. That money is allocated by Council and the Manager into different accounts for the operation of the City. One of those accounts is called Legal Fees. In other words, we pay the City Attorney for legal services to the City using your hard earned tax dollars. Now, if that City Attorney made say $50,000.00 from your hard earned tax dollars, do you think he would be renting a party suite at Coors Field to “bond” with the Policy Makers and their guests? Of course not, he must be making considerably more from your tax payer dollars. In essence my fellow Citizens, the Policy Makers and their guests were YOUR guest to the ball game, or perhaps the City Attorney could have pass those tax payer dollars back to our cash strapped city in the form of lower rates. But, we know that the City Attorney is a really nice guy and wanted to do something special for the City. So let’s try this on for size.
We have virtually no youth programs in place this summer for the children of this community. Some of the students at our schools are even homeless and probably will never see the inside of a pro ball stadium during their youth. What if that really great City Attorney offered to take those same Policy Makers to a ball game but, instead of paying for the guest of the Policy Makers choice, the Policy Makers had to invite and supervise one of our under privileged children as a guest. Now that would be an all American ball game, and a really great gift to the City supported by your tax payer dollars.
|
Be Done with It
|
The Policy Makers were welcome to take a guest of thier choice. Maybe a great Policy Maker would have chosen one of our under privileged children. The attorney presented an opportunity, with out strings or restriction, which is how a gift should be given. Our Policy Makers made thier choice on who to take as a guest. It is done, it was legal - there's no problem here - let it go.

The fact that we have a non existent Code of Ethic rushed through Council in order to beat Amendment 41 and that it is being taken advantage of at taxpayers expense? Let go of it? Not on your life, not in an election year. No strings? That is what the really nice City Attorney told us but, don't you find it interesting that the gift was given one month, almost to the day, before Council reviews the budget. It will be interesting to see how this past years legal fees compare with those of previous years.
One of the things that bothered me about a Council Manager form of government was the abuse of office we so often see in other Cities by the Manager. Our Manager has been here for a little over a month and through our elected officials he has been told it is OK to accept extravagant gifts, as long as nobody knows, in the performance of his duty. That is why I did not support the new charter. As they say, we have the best government money can buy. Makes you wonder about the sale of the police building and the Ice Ranch. What little gifts were given that we, the tax payers, will never know about?

You betch ya, tickets to a baseball game in January, after the elections would have been much less interesting.

And no more legal and no less ethical. Timing is everything in love, war and politics. Just ask the really, really nice Attorney. He will give you his legal opinion on just about anything and tell you what you want to hear so long as he gets his forty pieces of gold.

Tax Payer Dollars > To the City >To the City Attorney for legal fees > Back to the Policy Makers in the form of a “gift”.
Nice way to create some perks without the tax payer ever knowing. It’s as simple as that. Not so crazy.

I go with nuts.
“....Psychosis is a loss of contact with reality.
Psychosis often involves harboring false beliefs (delusions) and seeing or hearing things that no one else sees or hears (hallucinations). People with psychosis often become unreasonably fearful or suspicious (paranoid).
.... Excessive alcohol use can cause temporary psychosis; chronic psychosis can result if the drinking is long-term.....
... Some people with psychosis have false beliefs that can best be described as fearfulness and suspiciousness (paranoia). They may have vague fears or complaints about others controlling their lives, but many describe consistent suspicions of very specific, elaborate, and persistent plots against them....”

BottomlineThe really, really nice Attorney was going to make his pay check. regardless and last time I checked, he is entitled to spend his paycheck however he wishes. So, he did. It's really none of your business.
I vote for "yep, he's a nut" and agree he needs to go fill his script.

We're accepting Nuke waste in Edgewater? When did that happen? Oh, I know, keep my mouth shut. It ain't non of my business. After all that is the new American way. Edgewater has been Obamatized. Can we all sit down and drink a beer here. It could be an educational moment of historic proportions.

That's a great idea! Tonight, 6:00pm in Citizen's park we can all meet for National Night Out and have a beer. As long as the beer is in a can it's okay to have it in the park. I think you can even open the can and drink the beer.
See you there

It's dead., I told you so.The Farmer has been trying to stay away.....there aren't enough sharpend pitch forks. Certainly, the previous poster deserves a nice little poke. POKE.
Moderator? Where and What the heck have you been? The readers have approximatley 1 in 25 posts that deal with a "Suggestion for City Manager"? That's 2.5 pages of nothing but, an arguement that was diverted. I hope HJ is impressed. He had better be taking this job for the money cause why would you want to work for us people?
I've been holding my toung (typing). A guest (what a shocker) indicated something about an uptight town. I would like to say,"WELCOME, you must be new".
Possibly, the stick isn't dead? The Farmer will still try and avoid the first four forums. The Farmer doesn't do "Guest"...ever.

We're talking government in general. When it comes to ignoring the constituents, bureaucrats are born that way and elected officials are conditioned for it. We The People get screwed either way.

At its fundamental core, that is what democracy is all about? 51% counts. 49% doesn’t.

HJ,
What ya done got here in Edgewater is two personality types. Damn right!
Ya got yer type A's, that there's the ones that hold a grudge. Hell, these folks don't hold a grudge for a week or a month, they hold them suckers for decades. They is the polecats of the town.
Then ya got yer type B's. These folks is the damn rattlesnakes of the town. They extract a pound of flesh and move on. Sometimes it takes em a bit of time to get their meat but eat they will. Hell yes!
Now the way I see it, if I twas in yer shoes (and I ain't), I would determinate which Edgewaterians was which and handle the damn varmits as such. Damn right!

HJ,
Hell, I must a had one to many Colts under my belt. I plumb forgot the Type C's. They be the foxes of the town and the biggest majoritized group. They do a lot of damn yappin but, fer the most part they's harmless.
