Obama picks Biden...

Hey all -

Just a quick thought. I'm a little weirded out by Obama picking Biden for running mate. Here's my thought:

The country, clearly, is in hard times. We have an economy because we borrow it from China, to buy stuff made by China (and we ship our materials to China for them to make the stuff they export to us). Obama is running on a platform of "change!". Some of us like that. Some of us don't. So, to water it down, he picked the running mate that stands for nothing at all. So, on the Democratic ticket, you've got Obama (CHANGE!) with a running mate Biden (Ummm...).

I guess in some poll software, that looks like stability...

The Republicans have McCain (I was a War Hero decades ago... what day is it? Election day? Vote for me!).

What the hell has happened to the American Revolution? I grew up in the Commonwealth America won a war against. Yeah, you kicked Britain a new one. But America failed when it ENDED the Revolution in its own borders. If you read the Declaration, that is NOT the intent. Even the Vietnamese saw your declaration of independence as a chance to ignite a worldwide movement. Sometime before we were all born, Americans decided their own lifestyles trumped the public good. We never looked wide enough at "public."

America is getting fat and lazy. The current candidates are just an illustration of this fact. What is AMERICA doing? More importantly, what am *I* doing?

I'm going to cast my vote for Obama, because I can't stomach what the Republican Party is all about. I'll urge anyone who'll listen to do likewise. But we really do need "change." It starts in our own backyard. Say hello to your neighbours. Mow their lawn if you're mowing yours and theirs is overgrown. Shovel a sidewalk when it starts snowing. And have those folks over for dinner.

Times may yet get worse. If you've got friends - or a community - behind you - the worst case isn't worst.

I can't stomach what the Democratic Party is all about.  You embrace a welfare entitlement system that allows any scumbag to retire when there old enough to work.

They claim they can't work but drive nicer cars than me, and live rent free.

They seem to have an endless supply of food stamps that they trade and sell.

If I go the the doctor or hospital I pay,  if they go my tax dollars pay for them.

I think we should be harder and more strict with children so they don't grow up to be inmates but the entire education system is loaded with liberal Democrats who think kids need coddled and not punished.

The Democratic party is why this great nation is so jacked up.  I could go on and on but I think your part of the problem and you would think the same of me so why bother.

But that's just my opinion and the mere fact that we can each have opinions is what makes this Country what it is.
Devon Barclay

What the problem IS

Actually, I think the fact that you and I can have a conversation about this is what makes this country what it is.

The biggest problem in America is that the people who've grown up here have had it so easy that they don't attach any significance to the other side of the ideals our Constitution, Declaration, etc. stand for. And times are getting hard. They'll get harder. At a mere 26 years of age, I look at this next generation and feel like we've spoiled a generation.

Politically? My views are pretty simple. If a person is taking care of himself, and those he loves, and isn't trampling on someone else's business, leave him alone. If a friend or neighbor needs help, move hell or highwater to get them out of it. And if you find true love, throw everything out the window and fight like hell.

We're too organized a society to have a party with THAT platform. We're smart folks. We don't need nannies. And we don't need dictators either. The government is best that governs least, and we're not going to get there until we each take a much more comprehensive view of bringing up our own kids - to do their part and feel some ownership in this thing. For one, I'm fighting like hell to fulfill my part of that challenge.

And you thought a simple broadside on the 'stick solved the argument?
Anyone???

Okay, so no one wanted to talk about Biden.  How about Palin?

I’m still purple as they come.  Talk to me!  My mind is still very open (actually somewhat closed) to both tickets right now.

Palin appears to be a good mother, wife, and possibly even a good mayor. Past that, I see a woman who made it to the governorship because she was 'anybody but'. We know that very mentality right here in our own town, and look where it got us. I do not know how any intelligent person, especially one asking us to vote him into the presidency, can be so cavalier about his running mate. She was obviously a hasty, last minute, unthought out decision.
McCain choosing Palin makes me seriously question his ability to make a reasonable judgement.
And as far as the speeches last night... I wish Palin had written her own speech, because I cannot believe that she is that loved in her own state and still that nasty. What did we learn from her and Julianni's speeches? Nothing. Unless we need a comedian in the whitehouse. But then, the one we have is also pretty funny.
Purple Rain

Palin has made the only real speech in this campaign, Democrat or Republican.  She is sharp, witty, smart and I suspect Alaskan tough.  She took the Govenorship of Alaska from a corrupt Republican Good Old Boy system.  She's building a natural gas pipeline to answer our engery crisis.  She supported the "Bridge to Nowhere" boondoggle and then had the courage to reverse her position when she got the details.  And halleluah that she stood up to her bully cop ex brother in law and held the Alaskan Law Enforcement Commissioner's feet to the fire for not better vetting his officers (seems the Alaskan State Troopers have a collective drinking problem).  Get off the whole chauvinistic "can she be a good Mom and VP?" trip.  The woman has six years of executive service, that is more than Obama (0), McCain (0) and Biden (0) put together.  She took on the energy corporations in Alaska and forced them to pay their fair share and then took the surplus and put it in the pockets of the Alaskan citizens.
What is the problem with the Republican ticket?  It should be Palin-McCain.  In spite of that, they have my purple vote if they do as well in the debates.

Devon, that is exactly what the Republican platform is all about.  Are you sure you have your loyalties right?  Come on over to the Grand Old Party.  We will embrace your spirit and youthful drive.
Democrat, you bet

With the McCain/Palin ticket, I see little hope for a future that can sustain our country. It's time for our country be great again. The Obama/Biden ticket is the only way I can see hope for our economy, restoration of our worldwide policitical leadership and national   pride. The United States has to be restored to a country for all the people, not just the rich who have come to think of themselves as privileged and the rest of us as mere subservient workers who have tosupport them in their endeavors because they are the deserving elite.  8 years of living under the Bush buffoon regime are enough. We can only hope the new leaders, Obama and Biden, can clean up the devastation caused by the  Republicans. The Democrats have a hard road ahead but have proven in the past they are masters at cleaning up the Repulican messes.

As to Palin's speech, it seemed more like the speech of a college student out for head girl to me. Very immature for the most part. Julliani's speech was snide and sarcastic. He said nothing of value. Half an hour of bashing the opponent is typical of the "good old boy" mentality. I was very disappointed to hear the same bashing coming from Palin. We need strength and leadership. And CHANGE.

When are the debates?

I believe McCain and definitley Palin have redefined the GOP and I feel Obama has redefined the Dems.  The GOP now represents the common American while the Dems have become the elitist educrats.  Come on, Greek Columns?  That was wasteful spending as was the whole Invesco Field Fiasco.  What makes us think he is going to cut spending?
Guest

I would like to hear the McCain supporters give me a list - even a small list - of the McCain platform. What does McCain think that he brings to the presidency? And I don't want to hear what McCain thinks of Obama or Biden. I would really love to hear what he considers support for his own election.
Not hearing it

BS and rhetoric

I hear a lot of echoing of the rhetorical commentary that went on in the convention speeches from last night. Did the conventions only bring buzzwords to bash the Democrats? Can't they just stop the BS and get down to the issues at hand?
Prove to the voters why your party is the one to follow. Don't tell me a lot of bullshit about why the other party stinks. What makes your party so worthy?
How is anyone supposed to make a judgement based on who slams who the best?
Hockey Mom

I agree go McCain /  Palin for a greater America
Employeed

Working for a living - shopping to stay alive

Here is where I think the Dems are way off - economics.  Fred Thompson put it like this:

Quote:
They (Obama’s camp) tell you they're not going to tax your family.  No, they're just going to tax "businesses." So, unless you buy something from a business, like groceries or clothes or gasoline or unless you get a paycheck from a business, a big business or a small business, don't worry, it's not going to affect you!

I agree with Fred’s take on this one.  Do you really think a business, especially a big one, is going to absorb a tax increase?  No, they are going to pass it on or lay people off.  I thought the stimulus check was a stupid idea too, but I cashed my check my anyway.  I don’t think I grew the economy but I did use the money.  Too bad it was a 1-time little spending spree and not something more sustainable.
Purple Rain

How about McCains offer of inclusion, that to solve the problems America faces, we as Americans must work together and stop the partisanship bickering.  Palin's history echoes that same inclusionary ideology.  Her cabinet in Alaska includes Democrats and Independents as well as Republicans.
Obama offers us.......Obama.  Savior of the planet, hero of the down trodden and oh, did I mention he made history?
McCain offers pride in country, Obama offers shame.  McCain offers hope, Obama offers welfare and it's many traps.  I have no doubts that with time Obama will prove to be a great American leader but that time is not now and it is becoming painfully obvious that a relative unknown, Sarah Palin, has burst on to the scene with the exact type of CHANGE that Obama only alludes to.  In the end it is we people of the Purple Persuasion that will decide the outcome, as for the rest of you, you are only preaching to the choir.
Why all the bling?

Is it just me or does Obama appear a bit over the top arrogance wise?  Custom Presidential Seal, Greek Columns and a seperate venue for the acceptance speech?  If he is trying to reach out to the common American, he has a very strange way of doing it.  Doesn't the Democratic Party have better things to spend their money on than bling?
McWhat

Elitist

Obama is just an elitist.  He graduated from college. He has all of his teeth.  He exercises.  I fear people like that.

Get on board the straight talking express: Republicans have shrunk government and curbed spending over the last 8 years.  Even though the budget spending has doubled and the government headcount has nearly risen 25% incuding contractors, government is smaller and more efficient.  It just is.  Take my word for it; numbers lie.  And federal tax credits to big profitable corporations are not welfare.  It is only welfare if the money goes to poor moms and their children.

Plus, we all know deficits are smart economics.  We borrow money to buy houses don't we? And get a sweet tax deduction  not available to those low-life scum renters  who don't deserve preferential tax breaks.

That whole supposed surplus from Clinton was ridiculous and unnecessary.  Go straight talk express.  And Palin is so hot, my god, she is beautiful.  Our woman need role models like her.

And don't forget all her experience. Hey! Maybe Bonnie should run for President. She has a lot of experience!!!
substance

you are soooooo right. I love what the repubs have done with our economy. When I get to choose between gas for my car or my family's meds, I feel proud I have the right to make such a choice. Bless the repubs.  See what wonders they have achieved. And to think that under the Dems I could afford both gas and meds. wow.

We are in trouble if one judges the candidates by the props used at their speeches. Don't forget, over 80,000 people were able to take part in history because Obama opened the doors to a larger arena.  Who cares if he had a nice stage? It was one of the most heartfelt, honest and moving speeches I have heard.

Look to the solutions being offered by both parties, not your childish thoughts that Obama looks more confident than you are comfortable with. How can you think McCain will be different when he has voted over 90% of the time on the side of Bush? Does that tell you anything about his politics? He is not a maverick. He is more of an elitist than you may know.

  from author Matt Welch
"he's more blunt than straight, and he mangles the truth as much as any other politian, as Americans are slowly coming to realize. Another little-understood discrepency is the notion that he's any kind of "man of the People". For better or worse, MCain is a Beltway elitist, not some salt-of-the-earth everyman, and many of his instincts and policies and friendships flow from that top-down approach. His father and grandfather were both four-star admirals in the Navy,  and D.C. players when they weren't at sea. He's married to a billionaire heiress and his mom is a rich heiress as well.
He has "worked" in the private sector for a matter of months, total, as a P.R. guy for his father-in-law's exclusive Budweiser distributorship in Arizona. The guy has alwasy preferred the company of national journalists and senators..."  as to the success of building his myth as a maverick?  "Because he repeats the "maverick" and "straight talk" mantras over and over and over again, and as the great poet prince taught us, there's joy in repetition."

Man for the people? What can he know of "the people" who work back breaking jobs, do what they are told when they are told because there are no other jobs available in this broken economy? We can't take refuge from the world in a mansion or summmer house of our choice, just to get away and relax. No, we work relentlessly for bosses who make more money that at any time in history and feel it is their right to make demands on their workers because that is what we have become. Nameless workers. Do you think McCain, anymore than Bush, has a clue what reality most of us live in?  Call me stupid, but I want to have a good life and a chance for my children to have a good life.
Rock

Under your Dem plan - entitlement programs will run wild -  I don't want free health care that I pay 60% of my paycheck for.  I would rather pay for insurance that costs 15% and live with it.

Liberals are dreamers and think everything is a negotiation.  I'm glad we are getting politicians in positions who think you should be prepared to take care of yourself in a crisis instead of hoping the Govt will do it for you.   Hunt - Fish - eat red meat- Wish every code pink ass wipe was  banned to the far reaches of Afganistan to try thier negotiation skills on a terrorist.

Liberals are scared and it shows

Rock,
Where do you get your information? You sound like a McCain parrot. Why don't you find out the facts and then come back and tell us about it?
The Republican convention was a lot of hooey. The sad part is that a lot of people will believe the bs that was spouted. And it's those people the John McCain is hoping to attract.
You really can't fix stupid.

Do you really think he has any idea of how the average person lives? I doubt it. How many years of hard work does it take the average man or woman to make that kind of money?

You are wrong about the Democrats plan. We do not want the government to pay our way. I want to pay my own way, have my own dreams fulfilled and make my own mistakes, there is no pride in being carried. That is not what is going on with the Democrats.

So what is hunt, fish, eat red meat about? What has that got to do with the presidential race? I doubt the Repulican party would appreciate that as their slogan.

Typical response from a liberal.  I guess you think B Hussein Obama dug ditches prior to Political Office and wears suits off the rack from mens warehouse.

I'll stick with my party and we will see who prevails.
Purple Rain

I will give you this Rock, the Dems and the media have been more than a little shaken by this upstart Palin and they should be.
Now let's see.  It's OK if Michelle Obama wears $300 ear rings and lives in a 1.2 million dollar mansion but it's an abomination if Cindy McCain wears a $300,000 outfit.  Hmmmmmm.  Their both out of my league.  Palin, now theres a girl I can identify with.  Of course she eats red meat (that was obvious on Wednesday) instead of tofu and plays with the boys instead of gossiping with the girls.  Well we can't have that now can we?
If Bonnie had served two terms on Council before becoming Mayor and if she can get elected to still another term as Mayor then move on and unseat Ritter as Govenor and serve two years, I think that she would probably would have more executive experience than Obama.  On second thought, right now, Bonnie has more executive experience than Obama.  I think I am going to write Bonnie in as VP and Palin in as the big P.
Like I said there is a whole lot of preaching to the chior going on in this thread and unfortunaley for Reds and Blues the bottom line is it won't be decided by either of you.
Anyone up for a nice warm bowl of moose stew on this chilly Colorado evening?  Forever Purple.

One thing about Obama that bothers me.  His agenda for "Volunteerisim".  When volunteering  is mandatory it is not longer volunteering.  It is inscription at best and indoctrination at worst.

You got that right.  We already do enough and pay enough taxes to keep the welfare children of Barack happy for years to come.
Independent & not foo

They don't care about you.

I will never understand why middle class citizens who are being taxed to the teeth while the richest 1% run laughing to the bank STILL think the poor are the problem. Open your eyes. Your 15% insurance won't cover you for a catastrophic health problem. You will be required to lose everything you have, file for bankruptcy, to qualify for Medicaid and then you won't be able to find a descent doctor who takes Medicaid.
We are all one crisis away from being destitute - yes, that means you. Those rich folks don't live in Edgewater and they don't care about you. They are not on your side. You have nothing in common with them, except they love it when you buy into their demonizing of the poor and their cultural wars -  while they rob you blind.
I liked living in a country where we had a budget surplus, we were working on our educational system and we weren't the laughing stock of the world - as we are now. I remember being proud to be an American but it is becoming a vague memory.
The last 8 years has changed that. What a mess. Maybe the Republicans should win this election just because they would have to clean up after their own dog. Unfortunately, the conservative party is not conservative and consistently ruins our economy. I don't think they know how to clean up after themselves so We The People will have to do it. AGAIN! I'm voting for Obama.

Everyone is going to have the same healthcare plan that the US Senate has?  Right, and pigs fly (when their not wearing lipstick).  It's the energy stupid.  Hard to have a good job when illeagle immigration is running rampant and the jobs are going overseas due to overbearing regulations on industry.  Even with tax breaks the top 1% still pay most of the taxes in America.  Punishing success is not the answer.

1. If your employer doesn't offer good health care coverage then yes, you will have access to the same quality health coverage. Go to Obama's website, it will explain how the economies of scale can achieve that but basically big employers can afford much better healthcare than small ones.
2. Did you just call me stupid or were you referring to the "it's the economy, stupid" insight of the Clinton administration translated to 2008 terms, "it's the energy, stupid"? I'd agree with that. Energy and the economy are inextricably interdependent now, no way around it and drilling for it will not be enough.
3.

. Illegal immigration is not taking the good jobs, well educated green cards are though because we have stopped being competitive educationally.  Industry jobs are going overseas because of tax shelters and cheap labor overseas. Where are you getting your information, television sound bites?
4.
Quote:

.  Who did you get that from? Do you have any idea how rich the really rich are? They are bleeding our economy dry and leaving us with the bill and you call that success? I call it unfair influence. I call that theft and corruption. Stopping it is part of the answer. The wealthiest 1% are doing that to YOU and you are happily taking it? Why? So that you can associate yourself, in your own mind, with a dream of wealth and power you will never, never know. (You do live in Edgewater, right?) That's very generous of you. I don't feel nearly that generous. Our income tax has always been a graduated one and for good reason.
You should try to understand that the gap between the rich and the poor - and middle class - keeps growing. It is the greatest gap in income in this country since before WWI. When even Warren Buffett and Bill Gates (a couple of the richest in the world) are embarrassed at the low tax rate - and corresponding social responsibility - of the rich in this country, it's time to get a clue that inequality is being glorified by the Republican Party, and they hope the average American watches the flapping of the right hand while the left hand continues to dig into the National - and the Average American - pocket. The success that is, in your eyes, being punished, is the success in having lobbiests passing laws that exempt rich Americans from the responsibility of BEING American.
Obama is my choice

guest of 9:34,

I guess you enjoy living under the economic supression and worldwide ridicule that have become the Republican's platform. We need a man for the people, not a man for big businesses and their boards. I  cringe when hearing about their billions of dollars in profits, their millions of dollar bonuses while the average joe is supposed to be quiet and keep their nose to the grindstone just to survive.

Where are the days when a family could afford to go to a movie, go on a weekend drive and stop somewhere for lunch. Now these are difficult at best for many. Then god forbid you do have a medical emergency.  Anyone else know what I mean? Sure we have insurance that we are paying out the butt for, but that no longer covers many of the expenses. Try living paycheck to paycheck and then having to come up with an extra few hundred or few thousand for your copay. Start adding in all the extras we are hit with daily: rising gas, food, heat, electricty (yes, I know we are getting a break in a few months, about $10? great one family member can go to the movie), interest rates on personal credit, Or have children who need braces, hundreds of dollars in school fees paid, college tuition to insure a better life. etc, etc, etc. Not a problem for those in the money business but what about "we the people"? Get the republicans out of office. They are destroying our core.

I never imagined that earning an income that should leave us living well, self suffucient, able to have a little fun-- would not or just barely  cover our daily cost of living. Those with a family to raise or  those on retirement and fixed incomes, what do they do? How can we continue to listen to the conservative elitists, give them this power over us? We need or pride back, our ability to support ourselves, not those from and in other countries. We need a change of guard. Damn right we deserve a change.

I talked to a service agent--one of the 800# people-- a few weeks ago. Geez they sure are getting the language down. I even had to ask him if he was in the US. "No, I live in India."  I am so glad to know his wages are paid by a company that represents quality in America. What's wrong with this picture. I bought some auto parts for my car, we have to do most of our own maintainance, guess where they were made? The plant in Mexico. God bless our politicians. Not only have the illegals been allowed into our country for cheap labor for the big business cronies of our president, we now are building communities in their country and are employing cheap labor at those facilities. When will this nightmare end?

With Change.

I will proudly vote for Obama and Biden.

The Democratic Congress has more say on the issues you referenced than the President.  I too wan't change but that change can occure under a Republican as well as a Democrat.  Just take a look at what Ritter is doing to this State and your household budget.  If all of his tax issues pass in the upcomming election your taxes will increase by almost 20% with no relief down the road.  Tabor?  Gone.  Why would Obama be any different?
Nobody and I mean nobody want's to discuss illegal immigration and that is just plain wrong.  How is Obama going to fix job outsourcing?

Another Republican Fear Tactic

They try to scare you with threats of rising taxes all the while driving us into billions and billions of national debt. It's all going to come around eventually, probably about the time we want to retire and are told to go work at McDonald's.

They are even afraid to show us the coffins of our returning fallen on national television news.
Our schools are horrible. Colorado ranks as one of the worst of five states (an honor that used to belong to the deep south) for high school drop outs. After years of neglect, does it surprise you it may cost something to dig out of this mess?
You have a choice, you know. You can allow The United States of America to become a second or third world country. We are well on our way.
Obama speaks to keeping jobs at home, read his website. He does a better job explaining it than I can.

At present, Politico has the national poll with Obama 45% and McCain 47%, though the electoral count has McCain 265 and Obama 273. Which is to say, everything is pretty much even, and a single state or a single blunder could decide the whole race!

Let's make it Obama by a land slide!

Hillary will never kick Palins butt, she's to smart to even try in this campaign.  As a matter of fact Hillary has even told Obama not to expect to much from her due to a busy fall schedual.  In other words, "take a hike".
Maybe we will see a Hillary/Palin debate 2012.  Now that would be a real debate.
