More participation at City Council

Has anyone ever discussed the idea of providing a City Council meeting babysitting service so more young people who can't come to City Council now, could come with their kids and have volunteers babysit the kids somewhere at City Hall (conference room? Upstairs somewhere?) while they attend the meeting? It seems like everyone who attends the meetings are 45-50+
I would love to get younger people involved in the City but affording a babysitter to attend meetings has got to be a stumbling block.

I think it's interesting that this post hasn't attracted even a single reply. To whoever posted it, I think it's a really worthy idea. From sitting on my stoop in the afternoons, I see a lot of young families moving into this neighborhood, many with strollers, and it would be great if we found a way to make it easier for them to attend our public meetings.
heck ya

babysitters and beers

sounds darn god to me. while you're at it maybe you can serve some free beers too. it hard to find the time mand money to get out these days in this economy. and doesn't free refreshments always attract more people???

If the insurance and employees are hired by the City and regulated by the State I might go for it.  On the other hand if it's someone off the street offering thier section 8 duplex on Ames, NO THANKS my kids mean to much to leave them with people I don't know.

Parents helping parents?

How about if the parents, who want to attend City Council, get together with each other and the Fire Dept. CPR instructors and all get trained to take care of each other's kids? You could use the conference room  or the area outside the Mayor's office upstairs  and trade off staying with the kids and sitting down at the Council meeting. That way you would be able to check on your kids quite easily.
Just bring nap rugs, blankets and toys. :)

Babysitting Classes

I read a few years ago that some group was sponsoring babysitting classes for young people who wanted to sit other children and this class prepared them for the job and maybe even provided them with a certification. Does anyone know about these classes? I hear the above posters concern and I wonder if we couldn't find out about the curriculum for these classes and accomplish two things; 1. train young people in Edgewater to babysit safely and 2. provide them with some on-the-job experience in a supervised setting by having them babysit upstairs during Council meetings with an adult/parent in attendance. I think these classes happened in Lakewood. Has anyone else heard of them?
