FIREWORKS ???? FOREVER !!!!

what is up with a rumor i heard that EDGEWATER is considering NOT doing a fireworks show on the third of JULY!!?!???!?!??!
Have we not lost the vast majority of our traditions already--???!?!?!!?!!?!
ESPECIALLY the ones that can bring in some benefit and press to the "City of Choice"?

Do we need a petition NOW!???!??!?!?!

If Department Heads are being asked to cut two hundred thousand from thier budgets where do you propose the money for a bunch of fireworks will come from?
Guest

When you start the petition ask everyone who signs it to give you 50 bucks.  Lets see how many signatures you get.

I've got a box of black cats and some bottle rockets I'll donate.

Not a bad idea to take up a collection for fireworks. I think you will need about $8500.00. That's only if you want to do it on a different night than the fourth or third of July. Otherwise, you can expect to add in costs for extra police, barriers, and street permits so residences, police and fire can get around. How about in June to kick off the summer?

Benefit and press!?!?!  What the heck are you talking about?  An overly crowed city wrought with fender benders, vandalism and illegal parking is a party, it’s not a benefit.  And press - what press and why?  Getting your name published is hardly an aspiration.

We can’t afford programs for our youth.  We can’t afford a police department, let alone a police station.  We can’t afford a fire truck.  We can’t afford asphalt for our streets.  We are being forced to purchase a city manager.  Intangibles like ‘community’ and ‘sense of pride’ are going to have come from the people, not the budget.  Please explain why spending money we don’t have on fireworks is in any way a benefit.
golly wolly

C'Mon people!
If there are no fireworks in the budget.....lookout council.    LOOKOUT!

Who doesn't love fireworks? I say go for it. Golly Gee can come to the next budget hearing and show council where they can find the money for them. And Golly Gee, while you're at it, why don't you explain to the chiefs your plan to keep the peace.

Watching - you forgot to mention the part about the master plan being used at the discretion of the mayor. Yea. Good luck with that!

Guest of 11-17 at 4:59 PM; Council already made budget cuts in P&R, and it is still over budget by about $20,000. What's left to cut?
A part-time director is up to the mayor, and like I told Watching, "Good luck with that".  Council can only approve the funds, not how they are spent.

What P&R Master Plan is the Mayor supposed to use?  The one written in 1987?  Lots of luck even finding it.  The only thing holding up the MP process at his time is the Mayor.  As I understand (this is word on the street) the Council want's to eliminate the P&R Board and budget $10,000 to have a pro write it.  Lot's of luck with that meager budget and most pros like to work with a P&R Board.
As far as the fireworks go, I love fireworks.  There are lots of places to go see fireworks over the 4th, places where people are willing to put in the time and effort and recieve the monetary and image building benefit it brings.  Edgewater apparently no longer has that desire.  Let it go, see if we miss it.

I suppose you have to be aware of the reason Americans love their fireworks.  It can be found in our National Anthem and our Declaration of Indendance.  It's purpose ran red on the fields of Gettysburg and Selma.  Our fathers and our children suffered for it on 12/6 and 9/11.  Yeah, I like my fireworks and I don't mind a little inconvenience once a year.  After all we weren't the first to blow things up, just the best at doing it.

Farmer Scott

Farmer Scott, this is really not meandering, fireworks is fireworks.

Out city can explode all year long, that's the glory of it all.  The daily explosions of words don't cost a penny.

OK.  Now lets pull all of this info together and come to a conclusion on the Fireworks.  Let us be mindful of John Adams in a letter he wrote to Abigail in July of 1776:
Quote:
The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.

So I say we should have our fireworks on July 2nd as John Adams invisioned and since everyone will have guns the, cops won't be needed, and since we are going to burn everything in a bonfire the Wheatridge Fire Department can stay home.  Ya gotta love our Founding Fathers.  Ben Franklin had a habit of winking and saying "You becha".
