Fireworks and Edgewater Days Cancelled

Is it true that both these events have been cancelled?

fireworks and E. Days

I was told by someone in the know that YES they are cancelled.                    Frankly, I really am disappointed.  Those events  contributed to our wanting to live in Edgewater originally.  We lliked the feeling and idea of living in and being part of a town that still did things like this.  My husband and I both grew up in areas that did fun stuff like fireworks and small carnivals, etc..  Anyway, that is my two cents worth.
John

I heard the City spent the Fireworks money on the City Manager search. When thousands of people show up on July third,  like they have for years and don't see the Fireworks it's really going to give Edgewater a bad name and reputation.
JamieMac.

Funding fireworks?

Come on people, the city had to spend money on a search firm. If you recall, you the people voted for a city manager. Who would you suggest conduct the search - council, the mayor....?  I think we have learned a very valuable lesson about random searches for employees. And a city manager is no place to continue making those same mistakes. I have not heard one person suggest otherwise.
If any of you have followed the budget process, you will be aware that there is not enough money in the budget to run the city, let alone fund entertainment - no matter how noble, historical or community oriented it is. If we want to be entertained, we have to stick to the funds that are available through the P&R budget or figure out another way to make it happen. Unfortunately, fireworks are not an allowable expenditure of P&R funds.
I have said it before and, in my opinion, if anyone cares, the citizens of this city need to stop expecting general funds to cover their every need and desire. We just do not have that kind of money. If you want something else, then get with a group of people who want the same thing and figure out how to make it happen. There are a lot of talented people in this community. And  'the  city' is not the end all source for our citizens wish lists.
If you disagree, then I suggest that you show up at the next annual budget meetings and let us know how to do it better.
I am hopeful that, with a city manager, we may be able to turn the
financial problems of this city around. I do not think it is going to happen overnight, though. So, in the meantime, put on your thinking caps, drag out your ingenuity buttons, and make things happen yourselves.

We just got a new judge who's fines are half judge Greens.  How does that help the general fund.

If there's just one thing she don't need it's another hungry mouth to feed, in the GHETTO.

Sounds like someone in the cop shop has a grudge????
keeping it real

Sounds like plain old common sense to me.
neighborhood watch

In my opinion it's to early to tell but, if you cut staffing for the cops then get a new Judge who cuts the fine schedule.   I would expect that portion of the general fund would really take a hit.  We need a City Manager to prevent things like this from happening otherwise we spend twice as much and work twice as hard to accomplish the same goal.

i thought council set the court fines

The 'new' judge has stepped down and the assistant judge is probably going to be appointed as the new judge. I believe council asked for input from the police chief on this, so if he has any problems with it he needs to address them before she is appointed.
Hey cop shop poster - I'll bet you didn't have any problem with the hefty raise you got last year. Why so negative?
Guest

I'm not a cop and raises are good but I think for Edge cops once every ten years with no cost of living in between it's well deserved.
Hate paint

We need a judge who will inforce the anti- tagging and spray paint graffitti laws.

If someone is caught spraying, they should pay max fine.
Long time ago

Remember way back when Edgewater was the place you knew better than to speed through?  When everyone just knew this was not the place to caught doing anything sideways.  I’d love for us to regain that reputation.
JamieMac.

I don't think it is lost. I was standing in line at the Wheat Ridge post office a few weeks ago and a lady was talking to another lady about why she didn't take a particular route through Edgewater. She said that Edgewater cops have a mission to increase revenue through speeders. So she doesn't even go down 26th. I didn't let on that I lived in Edgewater, but found it amusing that this 'reputation' lives on.

Wrong image, wrong solution

Gaining notoriety because we are a speed trap is a very undesirable public image not an idenity to strive for. It wouldn't be much of a loss if it went away. Surely we can find a more positive quality to offer our metropolitan neighbors. We can have a competent, professional police force and find some other way to distinquish ourselves, don't you think? I mean who says to themself, "Gee, I would like to live in a town where the PD is really agressive and well skilled at entrapment."? No one, zero, zip.
Write a grant to get someone to monitor and remove graffitti fast. That is how you get rid of it. That's a more direct action that gets to the real problem.
lkeegan

I have to disagree with the poster of 1:49. Being known as  a city that polices its streets and does not tolerate speeding is a good thing.  It shows  that our police are protecting us and have zero tolerance for speeders in our city.  Yes, we need to be known for other amenties as well-- great neighborhoods, good schools, well maintained parks, recreation programs for kids, a city of people who watch out for each other-- those are things we can be known for, the things we need to strive for.  But, yeah, our reputation for catching speeders is a good thing, ask any parent.

How did I get here?

Speeding.....Tickets..accidents. Its how you learn to drive.  For some of us the education works, like a dream, its educational and everlasting. For others its another hoop to jump thru and Oh my god, I don't believe it. What an A ------.  A long time ago, you behaved oneself.  At that time you probably didn't do anything
wrong.  I liked those times; rules meant something and the people enforcing them meant more.  My father was a Colorado State Patrolman in the 50's, you know that ya might not mess with that?
I side to 26th Avenue;  Terra Village is my neighbor.  While, I have been typing at least three people have pasted my house doing 35+.  I know where I live and my child does not play outside however, it is pretty much do to the others not playing by the rules.
NOT an idiot,

Fowl

I throw the BS flag on myself.  I don't know how this post got this far; with the lack of fireworks. .....I like to light the match myself.  I am NOT a criminal. In the immortal words of a current Councilman....Americans love to blow stuff up.
Ditto,
