Electoral CollegeHow does this make any sense? Why would Colorado voters want their nine electoral votes to represent the majority of the country’s votes and not the majority of the state’s votes?
| Quote: | DENVER (AP) - The House has approved a bill that would change the way Colorado's presidential electoral votes are cast. Under the measure approved Tuesday, Colorado's nine electoral votes would go to the candidate who receives the most votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The current system awards all of Colorado's electoral votes to the candidate that wins the statewide vote.
The law would take effect only when enacted by enough states to reach a majority of the electoral votes.
The bill now goes to the Senate.

That pesky electoral college? It may be an attempt to remedy the faults in the Electoral College process. As we witnessed in the Bush/Gore election the popular vote went to Gore but the electoral college vote went to Bush. It is actually possible for the electoral college to tie which really throws a wrench in our election process. I didn't know this was happening but I think this would create a situation where all the electoral college votes might be obligated to follow what the popular vote is, national wide. I kind of like the idea, at least on the surface, as you describe it. It is worth looking into. Thank you for drawing it to my attention.

The whole idea of the electorial college is to not let the big East and West Coast cities run the country. Colorado will totally lose it clout if this passes. We will never again have a Presidential candidate campaigning here let alone a convention. BAD IDEA.

Mr. P, as usualAlways ready to do our thinking for us, right Mr. Patriot? You really didn't make your point, though. Why is it a bad idea? Let's try for some real analysis this time. How would this proposed change give more political clout to the more populated areas of the country? For that matter, why shouldn't the more populated areas of the country have more political clout? I mean they have more people after all...

All or Nothing???Why do all the electoral votes have to go the same way? Couldn’t the percentage of our nine votes match the percentage of the popular vote?

And a hole in the ground.I think I see a new color arising not blue or red or purple lets call it green (seems appropriate). When, did this country forget how to vote? I remember the hanging and the dangling. Sorry, V I'm going to side with the PATRIOT. Do we really wan't the Presidential Election to be determined by popularity? Is that really a good thing? If the great people of this state vote for a canidate, thats where the votes should go....ALL of them. Pretty straight forward. Frankly, if all other great people of say: California, Texas,
New York, Florida and so on vote the opposite and take votes how, is that a fair representation?
While, this will never happen; here is just an idea. All states get 10 electoral votes, all ten votes goto the college, the first to 26 states along with D. of C. WINS. And here's a kicker. No vote counting til a full day after the election. Which means Hawaii gets to vote til the polls close and the election won't already have been determined.
We vote for a President of the United States.....ALL OF THEM.

If I had my way...You know Farmer, the rest of the democratic world, big countries and small all vote together to elect their national leader. They think we are quite loony with our Electoral College and really, when it was created, it was created because back in those days so few people had an education and there was a distinction between "landowners" and commoners, a hold over from jolly old England so it made sense at the time, to provide a group of citizens who could read to ensure we were electing good people. These are issues we don't have now. Although I haven't googled Wikipedia yet, I seem to recall that the reason the electoral college was created is now obsolete but it is in the Constitution or somewhere where it is really hard to weed out. That's the sticky wicket. I could be wrong, it's been a long time since high school US history. I really don't intend to tap dance on your federalist loyalties and statehood is all well and good in some respects but electing our President shouldn't be a team sport like cheering on the Broncos. If we as a nation are electing our President, why can't we simply do it by popular vote?

Back to the forth.I guess we are similarly edumicated. Why, should Rhode Island be more important than Wyoming? Its just an idea. Like, I said, when did we forget how to vote. Plain and simple its the BAD politics that really piss the peasants off.

Electoral CollegeAh Farmer, I'm sure we have common ground and it may well be at that point where we are both weary of partisan bickering. History was never my subject. On the humanities menu I chose English Lit., Creative Writing or Art History and I did once take a few credits in the History of Dance. I can opine more intelligently about Rodin or highland vs lowland folk dancing than I can about US history!
However, I am pretty protective of my peasant's vote.

You are an idiot, sorry and stuff don't mean to offend...As you would probably know "V" I typically steer clear of the National Political thread just for this reason. It goes on and on and on might as well be stuck in the pan-handle with a tornado coming. Nice to now you are High School edumicated and even one of those high folutent degrees. Anyhow, it goes to my point of popularity. Do you really think the most popular person in your high school was suited to be the best leader? If I can get you to pick some corn, maybe we do have some common ground.
I'll leave you with this: Why do both coasts dictate, when the middle of the country feeds and fuels the rest of us? Of course that exempts the wine and citrus, let alone seafood.
If you really think, I think your an idiot you don't know,

Electoral CollegeI'm not sure what this has to do with the Electoral College, except to say, I don't feel qualified to comment in detail, so I'll put in my two cents and move on. I think it is broken. It will be interesting to see what our duly elected State legislators decide to do about it.
Oh, BTW I grew up in a coastal state. They grew wheat, potatoes, apples, alfalfa and corn too not to mention the seafood and a lot of the timber to build midwest homes. So, who is feeding whom? But this is off topic, no meaningful discussion about the Electoral College here.

PatriotThe rural areas of the Coastal United States are not the problem, they face the same issues that we in the middle of the country face. It's the high density urban areas. They do not have to deal with the same issues as Colorado (mainly water). Yes, States Rights do account for something. We are after all the UNITED States of America. Each state has it's own issues and culture. If we are going to go with the popular vote then abolish the Electorial College altogether and leave it up to one person-one vote (unless you belong to Acorn of course). Besides everyone knows that everything in NYC is better than anywhere else on the planet (except Chicago). Ever ate Huevos Rancheros in Times Square? Yummmmmm, if you like marinara sauce infused with jalapenos.
By the way, we need to get rid of that Constitution. It's way out of date and was written by a bunch of old white guys.
