I think in order to get a good answer, there has to be information that goes out to the whole community. Not many in the general community are aware of the TS and have no way to know about this discussion.  I think this forum is wonderful and wish we could get the info out to the total commuity. Perhaps Park and Rec could move forward with a  door to door flier or a one on one survey door to door. I would think the Open Space Funds could provide funding to do this as it would be directly related to the P&R program.

Another thought would be to make a flier with the TS site address and put it out for the whole community. There has been some mention of having this forum become more of a community newspaper/forum. This would be very doable if the address can be put out in front of the whole city and there can be "reporters" who can post updates on city projects, announcements, debates, meetings, general info and etc. All are available now to those of us who know about his forum, but we need to find a way to get more of our community  involved through knowledge of this site.  Since this is a forum that has worked for many years, why not go beyond what it is now. With so many having computer/internet service available, this could be a wonderful way to open the city up.  I have heard this mentioned before(the TS becoming more of a community newspaper).  Maybe as we are all quiet now, hopefully contemplating many changes that may be in our future, this is a good time to look ahead and make simple plans for more involvment  by more citizens.  I mentioned this idea to many people I  met in the last few weeks, and they were very open to this since we have very limited local news available.....Just an idea.   Laura K
JamieMac.

Great idea, Laura. When this forum first started, notices were put up in some of the local businesses. It started out really well and then a few nasties got in and turned it into a negative forum. One even started his own TS2 - which didn't last very long. Then the server got really slow, and until the stick moved to the new server, many were having trouble even getting in.
Now with this new server, and some of the recent ideas people have put out, maybe it is a good time to get the word out again.
I'm sure that the current administrator would be open to any ideas or maybe even help (?) in making it happen.
HEY ADMIN 1- whaddyasay?

PS- That wasn't an offer of help - at least not for another 3 years -
just a 'You go Girl!'

I would be glad to help with organizing a city forum on this site and in working on a way to publicize it. As I said in my earlier post, the newspaper type forum  was not my idea but one I had heard from others not long ago. I am just trying to get more people to get involved and to be informed.

I don't want this to take away from the P&R postings so maybe we should copy and paste these last few posts to another thread? Or could admin move them to a more appropriate thread?  Let's keep this idea alive. I know all are very busy right now but if we can, let's at least start the forward motion and see if we can achieve a city wide forum.  So many of the citizens I have talked to know zilch about the city--not because they are not interested, but because there is very limited information available.

Could this forum handle such a project? It would mean a lot more people posting and also responding to posts. I think!!  Laura K

wider distribution

Hi Laura, Admins (secret, and not-so-secret):

With the prices as high as they are, I don't know about print as an option - unless someone wants a big advertising drive, which I think would be inopportune.

But I wonder about a link from the City website? It doesn't have to be a formal endorsement, but just something like "City Links > Edgewater Talking Stick". "More talk about Edgewater."

Otherwise, maybe just grabbing neighbors and spreading the word is the best thing? The more the merrier! Perhaps a few don't know enough about me to talk smack :)

Nice thought Devon, but do you really think our mayor would allow that? It would mean giving even more people access to an 'OPEN' forum that may not disagree with her.
Think about it.

Geez, I had almost forgotten about this topic. Thanks for looking around Devon and reviving this post. Yea, let's work diligently on getting this  linked to the city site and also think of a good way to get the address of this forum out to the public. Maybe we can work with the new city manager or even with council to get permission to put this link in the city newsletter? Anyone know if that was ever tried or could be allowed? I would think, with all the great ideas that get posted on the TS, a city manger would relish having this site tied to the general city correspondance, maybe even be able to utilize our site as a link to the "New Edgewater City Site" (vice versa, too) that I would hope will be forthcoming with a new manager.

Jamie, can we bring this up before council? I would imagine lots of the community will be up for helping promote and write accurate posts here regarding meetings, events and etc. Then add in all the school events we will hope the schools will post, community thoughts and all the phenomenal brainstorming that happens here. What an opportunity we have. I myself am swamped for a couple more weeks but should have more time opening up after mid to late August. Summer is just sooooooooo busy. Shall we make some kind of pact here to move forward after summer?  Keep posting as ususal but forge ahead come fall with plans for  a community service  enews on this TS site?

Get it out there.

Good stuff Laura and JamieMac.  Thank you Devon for bringing it back to at least be talked about.
I have meet with the principal at Jefferson High and was thoroughly impressed. The Saintinel is a great publication but, is quarterly (maybe).  There is some good things that take place at that school but, unless you have a child attending, you probably wouldn't no about it.  I told Mike Little (principal) that he might get the community support if, the people knew what was going on. There are many that don't have computers but, those of use that do are probably not going to go looking for the school website. If you knew that a game or other event was taking place on any given Thursday, one might not go but, knew that it was taking place.
Good stuff Good stuff!!!(smile)
JamieMac.

I think that anything that goes on the city website would have to go through the mayor. YOu could bring it up at council as a question to her.
