Earth Hour

Turn out. Take action.
Be part of this historic event.
March 28, 2009, 8:30 pm local time

World Wildlife Fund is asking individuals, businesses, governments and organizations around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – Earth Hour – to make a global statement of concern about climate change and to demonstrate commitment to finding solutions.

Global warming is a liberal lie designed to allow the government much more control over energy and taxes.  I will leave my lights on like a free man should and will pay my bill accordingly.
Patriot

Right on Brother.  Let the light of freedom shine.

Rush Limbaugh Get Out of Town!

Oh boy! When Rush starts dictating public awareness we don't have any. When we start rationing carbon emissions, he will change his tune. I'd like to see Rush trying to live in his huge masion in Florida without AC. He might even sweat off some of that lard. Patriot, for your own good, turn off the radio. I'm worried about you.

tick, tick, tick...

My lights will be out.
Patriot

In the seventies it was Global Cooling, now it's Global Warming.  What's next in the wide world of Chicken Little Para-science?  I am replacing all of my incandescent lights with CFLs.  Why?  Not to prevent Global Warming but, to preserve a finite energy source.  Of course CFLs have trace amounts of mercury in them so at some point I plan to move over to LED technology when it becomes affordable.
So why am I not going to turn off my lights tonight?  Well, if I burn candles I actually am putting more carbon into the atmosphere than if I burn my CFLs.  Candles are made from paraffin which is made from oil.  If I let my house go dark and I need to go to the head I just might trip over something and break my leg.  Then the Misses will call 911 and here comes two firetrucks and an ambulance, there goes the carbon credits and 50,000 acres of Polar Ice will fall into the Sea killing four Polar Bears to the North  and ten Emperor Penguins to the South.  Not to mention the Worlds oceans will raise by one one millionth of a nanometer.  I can't win for loosing.
So tonight I'm going to snuggle up under my CFLs with a copy of O'Reilly's A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity, Rush on the radio and Glenn Beck on the TV.  Who knows, I may even play with my Obama Bobble Head.

geez, it's only one hour. Is that really too much to ask?

Sometimes it’s as much attitude as it is action.  Attitude around isn't our next crisis it’s the current crisis.  At least our neighbors who care enough to be concerned are doing something on a positive note.  “can’t win for loosing”? Only if that is what you believe.
Guest

Science - Consider learning it.

Hey Bobblehead. Global warming IS eventually global cooling.
Patriot

CFLs aren't positive?  A hollow act of sitting in the dark for one hour is positive?  Gee, I guess I have my priorities all backward.  We all need to do a little more Dr. Feelgood and that's going to save the planet for sure.  The last time mankind followed that kind of thinking was known as the Dark Ages.  If not for the Industrial Age, slavery would would still be the engine of civilization.  Exactly how is that positive?  Should we light our homes with whale oil as our ancestors did?  Would that be positive?
How many of you have the courage to go to the power box on your house and pull the switch for a whole week?  Now that would be a true commitment to your cause.  Don't just turn off the lights, turn off the electricity!  Anything less is hypocritical at best and a flat out lie at worst.

Thanks for emphasizing the point Patriot.  It is all about attitude and yours is predictably cynical and combative, not positive.  You talk mercury in the same sentence as CFLs.  You suggest broken legs and 911 would be a part of your snuggle time.  Candles are bad.  Bears and penguins are going to die.  And now you jump head long into some speech about the Dark Ages and slavery???  We all know how to play the chicken little, what-if game, but you excel at never letting it go.  Like I said attitude counts.
Ed G Waters

What the hell is a CFLs?  I'm goin to pop a couple of glow sticks, light up a White Owl and grab a quart of Colt 45 at 8 o'clock.  That's about all the damn light I need for an hour.
Cheers

That's the spirit Ed G!  I'm doing what your doing.
Patroit supporter

A recent study says if a majority of morons actually all turn thier lights off and then all turn them back on an hour later the start up actually takes more energy and damages the climate worse.  Even most Dems are sceptical of global warming now.  Did you know that the majority of the earth was actually 2 degrees colder this year than last.  Climate runs in cycles sometimes hotter and sometimes colder.  It's unfortunate that the term global warming is now used as an excuse by snake oil salesmen to con no brain people into a  sky is falling mentality
Patriot

Patriot Supporter,
Are you so bold as to believe there is a greater cycle to Mother Earth than that of the far left pseudo-intellectual cycle of the Chicken Little Crowd?  You my friend are a brave individual and I thank you for standing on the side of reason.  It is eight o'clock pm on March 28, 2009 and my CFs are burning bright with my programmable thermostat turned down to 68°.  I would imagine you are in a likewise condition, we are true Patriots.

You are a true far left Liberal, astute in the art of taking things way out of context.  I suggested nothing of the sort.  But I, being a true patriot, forgive you.

Hope we can believe in.

This is the most non green City in America.  I  ran  to  my car at 8:30 P.M. and drove up and down the streets only  to find that nearly all of the citiizens  of our community could care less about Earth Hour.
Ed G Waters

Ya know what burns my ars.  I'm sitting here smoking my White Owl, C45 in hand with a orange and a green glow stick stuck in each ear and I look to the South and my neighbor, who done went and joined Green Peace and the Serria Club.  You know, That Neighbor. with the Save Earth Now,multi-religious symbolized, Darwinian Fishy thang, Delicatesed Lami bumper stickers on her 1973 Buick Century Regal with the collecter plates.  Well her house is damn well lite up brighter than a Christmas tree and I know she's the onliest one there.
Hell I'm takin these damn glow sticks outta my ears fer sure.  Now I probably have cancer of the brain.
So it's just me, the White Owl and my trusty old 62 oz Colt 45 sittin here in the dark takin in all the damn karma the universe has to offer.  Life is good, that's all I care about.

All this 'fun' aside, I certainly hope that some of you are just acting out your 'creativity', and don't really believe that there is no real danger to our earth.
That would be very sad, not to mention very, very dangerous. If people do not want to see the truth that is right in front of them, presented to them with more scientific proof than you can shake a stick at, then it is truly a sad way to end our world. If there are any little green men in the universe, they will have no doubt that we are not the most intelligent life in this universe.

Everything has to start somewhere.

To Guest of 2:04, take heart. These are but a few voices. I believe many, many Edgewater residents would enthusiastically support such events as last night's Light's Out, if they knew about them.
I have read in other places people throw block parties or other events to publicize environmental awareness and give people a place to come together in solidarity around environmental issues during Lights Out. We can do the same in little ol' Edgewater and we should. It would give us an opportunity to meet more like-minded people who live here and who do care. We just don't know them yet.
So, here's to next year and an increasing shared concern for Mother Nature.

Your truth is nothing more than a lie created by liberals just like you to indulge your fantasy of doom.

The Horseman

Do what you will, oh humanity.  There are far more powerful actors on the cosmic stage.  The plasmic force of Solar magnetic waves due to arrive on your humble planet in December of 2012 will render your feeble electronic civilization useless.  Then in 2025 life on Earth will end as you know it in a great meteoric cataclysm not experienced since the end of the Jurassic Period.  Your Oceans will turn into acid and your beloved blue sky will vanish into a hellish black and red storm.  Mankind will succumb in a Quasars wink.  Thus say the prophesies, thus say the science.  Turn off your lights if comforts you, burn them if it brings you pleasure but, know that you have no say in the cosmic end game.

It's your bank account, but if I’m going to be dust by 2025 I’m spending my money on ice cream, not electricity.

Rush Limbaugh Get Out of Town!

Dear Horseman, Piss off.

This thread is about participating in Light's Out it is not about whether you like the idea or not.
It is not about debating the validity of global warming or the end of the world.
It was a simple announcement for those who might like to participate.
Who the hell do you think you are telling people what they think is wrong?
At least have the courtesy of making your own topic NOT the arrogance of interjecting your unsolicited judgements about other peoples ideas.
At least that way I will know which threads to avoid.
LMA

Moderator?

Dear Moderator,
I am concerned that the posting that started this thread was debated instead of allowed to remain an announcement. In the future would it be possible not to allow this sort of "debate" about announcements? I don't want people to stop posting events because of this.

Yeah Admin we don't want to hear opinions on a forum site.  What were you guys thinking?
CFL's Rock!

Cool Calc Sheet!

I don't have anymore incandescent bulbs but I played with your calc sheet Chocolate Chip Mint, wow, that was convincing!
Everyone, I highly recommend plugging in your numbers to see how much you can save by changing your light bulbs. It is so interesting how little changes by many people can have such a huge impact.
Where did you find that, CCM?
Patriot

The Patriot has been using CFLs for years and that is why I am a true Patriot.  Besides I like the extra savings in my pocket while "saving the planet".  Of course there is that small mercury problem but we can deal with that later, I don't eat fish anyway.
