Drum Circle on July 4th

Drum Circle on July 4th

If we may have a bonfire at the park this July 4th, we can blog and advertise a "Fire Drum Circle"...these people are spiritual and peace loving...usually belly dancers, fire dancers and light dancers show up in great costumes as well...very cool. People dance and kids dance and love it as well. Bring your Dijembe Drum, maracas, tamborines, clickers, flutes, and all percussion instruments welcome!

They usually start before dusk and end at midnight...if you don't know what this is, google "drum circles" and check it out...really. You hear the tribal beats from there and afar...really something. We are in our 50's with careers and we have open minds...and we experienced these...in these hard times it is better to be open and optimistic than before, and this is great community for us...they are REALLY cool events that are fun, safe and FREE!

If we can't get an ok, on if the City will not do a "bonfire", than can someone bring a patio wood firepit and call it a BBQ...and have the drum circle anyway...so are we up to this people?????????????

I hope there are'nt too many negative people with negative replies...to an idea that may work!
Great Idea

This is a great idea.  You have strayed away from the traditional talkingstick style and respectfully presented a very positive idea.  Thank you.  I hope this happens.

Have you talked with the police chief about the fire?  There must be plenty of creative options available.
Yes, Great Idea

Drum Circle

I really like this idea. My question is how do we move it from an idea on the Stick to a plan with real people and on to reality?
Talk it Up

First place to start might the open-mic at Edgewater Coffee Co tonight - Friday.  Used to be Angie's, down on 25th, next the the Thai place. They seem like a very creative group of people that could get the networking off to a great start.  Word or mouth will eventually lead to someone who knows the next step.
Groooovy

From beer to pot.  This is a great idea, I'm sure the Fire Chief is going to jump on the bonfire bandwagon right now.  Anyone thought about contacting the EPA about the toxic emissions that are generated by the kind of wood traditionally used in bonfires.  Oh, and where are we going to place the bonfire?  I know, in the middle of the baseball diamond.  That should provide for easy clean up.

Bong on hippsters, Bong on
Farmer Scott

I thought a heard a sucking sound.  How about in the middle of the freshly painted GAZEBO.

Keep up the good thinkin'.

oops july 3rd

oops july 3rd

Original poster here...I meant to say July 3rd.

We are away until later this month, and in California.

We ran onto Drum Circles here and they are quite nice. As we are away, we cannot make the coffee house or City Counsel, etc, but we will inquire with the Fire Dept. regarding this event.

If any of you wish to promote/ present this (sooner than later), we will be happy to be in touch here soon with the details, but PLEASE Google "Drum Circles" and check the beat, people and events...this is a growing movment all over the world....really!... get a buzz going about it.

If it isn't welcome here in Edgewater, we will blog it for Sloan's Lake Park,  but thought it would benefit Edgewater's community and businesses as we are here with all of you!

ps: If this takes off, this could be done weekly at a certain day and time frame.

why not do it after the fireworks show as everyone will already be in the park.  Count me in, it sounds like a wild time and I'll bring my medical marijuana.
Fred the Head

All joking aside - and I know that most of you jokers are old pot-smoking hippies yourselves - a drum circle is a very cool thing. And if you look around at where they are happening you will see that it's not all old hippies doing them either. Both young and old of many different cultures enjoy these events. Kind of like the celtic sessions, but pot instead of whiskey. OK. THAT really was a joke. I am in no way suggesting that either be allowed.
Music is a great way for families to spend time together and with other families. In the old days  music was a nightly event in many homes and communities. Most kids these days don't know what music is unless it comes out of an earbud, and even then, some of that is questionable, and it certainly isn't shared. AND....AND.... it is a proven fact that children who are musical also do better in school. Music, art, theater - all things that this little town could use more of.
I'm not suggesting they replace the fireworks, but they could be a great community activity. And people, there is not only one person in this town who can put on community activities. Since when did we become so damned complacent and allow the government to dictate our lives in such a way that we feel we have to go to city council or the P&R director for our enjoyment?

Why not here? Why not now?

I may live in Edgewater but I have been many places. For those of you who can't handle anything different, go ahead and curl up with your sparklers and your Coors.
It only takes a spark...I can hear the drums beating now...what a beautiful sound.

Drum Circles are fine but the bonfire is a bit overboard in an urban setting.  I say gather, beat your drums four times a year.  Neo Native American or pagan events can be very cool.  Just don't offer it up as a replacement for Independence Day activities.
LETS DO IT!

LITTLE DRUMMER BOY AND GRASS ROOTS GIRL

Boy of boy~ what a great idea!  Maybe we should form a monthly drum circle down in the park- first Sunday of the month at dusk - kind of thing to get us throught the spring, summer and fall and build a community event ourselves! We could even evolve it into a potluck ---no pun intended!

there are awesome informal drum circles every weekend on the stage at red rocks.  Too bad we don't have a cool stage like that!

I can bring my djembe, bongos, tambourine and lots of shakers for the kids.  I can imagine how fun it would be to play, listen, dance and watch the kids do something that doesn't invole a video screen and actually make some neighborhood friends! Even the babies will enjoy it and they won't NEED a swing for this one!

I love this idea! And I agree it should not replace our traditional events, and we don't have to rely on a council or city employee to create the events we so desperately want to offer.

Let's do it people. Let's take our fate into our own hands and "just do it"!  How about we start on April 5? Or maybe the last Sunday of the month and start it March 29th?  BTW- wheen is easter? I can't find my calendar!

maybe we could even invite Joe Natchio to publicize the event...I hear he may be outta work.....

Sense of things to come

That's what will make this town strong and will build a real community. People doing for the community not waiting for the government to do it all. We need the citizens to take back their role as citizens. The whole country needs to act to bring their own communities to life.  Don't you think we need each other more now than ever?  Whether it's a drum circle or a gathering to talk in the coffee shop or a family or community day at the park.  Once people start to reach out, others will grab their hands. With over 4,000 people here, we should get things going.  Yeah, it does take a village.

Watch out for the P&R director. She may just shut you down if you don't get a permit.
Guest

She can't even turn on the park lights when shes supposed to.  Besides drumming in the dark is more fun.
April 5

April 5th

April 5th at dusk it is....can we do this people????????

If you are serious about this I think that you should probably get a little more together than an anonymous Talking Stick agreement.

Need a drum

does anyone know where to buy a used or not really pricey drum?
Oh, also does anyone know where to find a sense of rhythm :)
Reggae Man

Use a trash can, that's how they do it in the big cities back East.
JamieMac.

Oatmeal boxes, coffee cans,...
oh, and for the wind section - doodoodoos. (These can be made from paper towel rolls or, if you're adventurous, toilet paper rolls)

Seriously, drums of different kinds can be picked up in music stores that sell used instruments for decent prices.

The garbage can thing is true. There are some professional bands that use found stuff, washboards, trash can lids, spoons - to make really incredible music. A little imagination, ingenuity and rhythm (Sorry, I'm in  - I think there is something to be said for natural rhythm) can turn up surprising sounds.

Shaman Drums

They come in different sizes, some are 12" - 16" in diameter and 5" or more inches deep, the larger ones make deeper more melodic drumming sounds. Taos Pueblo is known for their shaman drums but you don't have to drive to Taos as Boulder is so close.
Will your drum circle have some experienced drummers?  It helps to learn from someone who can play more than one rhythm. It's good for you though, good for your town too.
Don't listen to the oatmeal box suggestion. That person doesn't know about drum circles. She knows how to make make believe instruments for children though. Doodoodoo's, huh? That's pretty funny.

Drum Circles in Colorado

JamieMac.

doodoodoo's

I'll have you know that doodoodoo's are an ancient celtic instrument. Those celts knew how to recycle. Sure, you can go and spend a bunch of money on some piece of hide stretched over a ring, or a piece of plastic with holes in it if you want. But don't discount the melodic tones of thriftiness!

Check out Craig's list, eBay, or google for used instruments...

I think we could do this without a permit. Just some friends getting together in the local park to bang on some drums, or trashcans or whatever makes the sound work.....does that really require a "permit"???

Let's do April 5th. I am one to be counted!

We could even invite members of "the tribal council" (no offence Jamie) to come and play- I just wonder if they will "survive"???
JamieMac.

None taken. But I don't know if you really want me trying to maintain rhythm. Although it sure does sound like a lot of fun. I could bring a bodhran.
tin can alley cat

no rhythm?

play your doodoodoo JamieMac... I would show up for that!
Drum Circle

Conga, bongo, caracas, trash can, it's all good sound!

Bring your bodhran, JamieMac. We'll see ya there. Heck, we can all follow the beat of the trash can drum and we will still sound great!

Summer Drum Circles

Are there any percussionists who can teach us newbies how to do this? It sounds like fun. Will someone post when the drum circles will be meeting?
JamieMac.

No doodoodoos this weekend

The weatherman said to expect snow this Saturday. That would seriously hamper the accoustic effects of my doodoodoo. It tends to get soggy in wet weather.
Maybe the organizers of this event would consider another (warmer) day to kick off this event?

Planning Summer Drum Circles

I understand some people are hoping to plan summer drumming circles but there isn't a drum circle planned for Saturday. Hitting a drum head with your bare hands in this weather would hurt! Hopefully, we will get something going for summertime though.

We were really hoping to be there tomorrow, but it looks too cold....sure glad there is a buzz going for this though!... maybe next Sunday at dusk???????

Is it a good idea to drum on Easter Sunday?  What would the Pope think?
Rome

The drums were silent.  Salvation prevails.
It was raining

and the drums were silent, it has nothing to do with salvation only rain

Like we need more potheads in this city.  Everyone from across the lake will be here that we don't need.  Just another mess to clean up.  More money for the fire dept to put out.  Like we have that!
