Be Proud Edgewater, Be Very ProudI attended tonight’s City Council workshop. On the agenda was the transitional period from Strong Mayor to Manager form of government. This change of form of government is very rare indeed. First let me say that I am impressed with the way the City Council and our Mayor are dealing with our decision. Every one of them, to a person, wants to see our mandate implemented in the most orderly manner as possible. Kudos to each and every one of them.
The City was blessed with the aid of ICMAs Range Rider, Al Thelen. An ICMA Range Rider is a person that ranges a certain area helping municipalities and City Managers deal the obvious issues that come up in day to day operations of a City with a Council/Manager form of government. You don't get to wear the badge of Range Rider easily. Al started out in the early sixties as a Deputy City Manager, moved on to become a City Manager in cities both small and large and then served a time as a Municipal Consultant before the ICMA gave him his badge for the Northern Front Range of the Rockies. He knows his stuff. The cost of this service? Zip. De nada. Zero. Nothing. City Council and the Mayor in their infinite wisdom, sat and listened to his sage advise tonight.
All of that aside I want to relate a moment I had outside of City Hall, a moment with Al Thelen. Al Thelen knew of our little city, he knew of our new Charter. He has discussed it with people within the circles of power not only at the County level or State level but at the National level. Do you know what this man of esteem has to say about your City Charter? It is one of the best City Charters he has ever seen and many, many important people are reviewing it.
Here's to you Edgewater and yes, you can be very, very proud.

Al Thelen's comment on our charterWOW! I thought we did a good job on the new charter, but to hear that people of that caliber are reviewing the charter at that level, and viewing it as high quality - and perhaps a model for others - is astounding.
I'd like to again thank my fellow commissioners for the quality of the document, and the Citizens of Edgewater for voting the new charter into existence.

The Colorado Property Rights Coalition presented the City with a plaque of recognition last night. The plaque reads:
Colorado Property Rights Coalition
Proudly Recognizes
Edgewater, Colorado
For Their Stand on
Property Rights
Mr. Wambolt spoke about how this organization is usually fighting cities, not commending them.

The award must have been granted for the 19.5 Eminent Domain portion of our Charter which is extremley proprty rights oriented regarding the taking of private property by eminent domain to give to another nongovernmental entity. It goes well beyond the stance that most State, County and Municiple governments not only in Colorado but Nationaly as well. It is probably the biggest landmark in our Charter and has drawn a lot of attention, not all of it positive.
It must be noted that Councilman Adam Gardner was the author and lobbyist behind this Charter clause. I personaly feel it is one of the best parts of our Charter even though I voted against it on final reading.

Eminent Domain????
|
who, what , where , when and WHY?Did we cut off our nose to spite our face? Don't get me wrong- I think that it is great to receive an award - but gotta know who its from wnd what their mission is. I have been concerned for a couple of years know- since the city sold the PD to a private owner- and that private owner now holds the puppet strings of the PD and city because they can at will at any time raise the rent of the PD building to anything they want- and the city has done nothing to my knowledge to renegotiate a contract- since the city planned to have the PD moved LONG ago - well let me cut to the chase- WHO DOES THE PD ANSWER TO? the citizens, the "mayor", or the PRIVATE BUSINES OWNERS???????????
I have talked to some council members in the past about eminent domain to reclaim this property for the general welfare of the city since the PD hasn't and doesn't look like it is oving anytime soon! Who up there on council has the balls to do anything about it- to even raise the issue? No let us keep paying out the A** for high dollar rent on the pretty much condemnable property - until when ??? and lets keep the PD answering to this less than reputable group of private business men who get away with having drunk drivers leave the bar and drive right past the PD on a daily basis- without there ever being a consequence!! Does this keep the good citizens of Edgewater safe??? NO I say. Not at all! It is classic of old school mafia bought police forces of the prohibition era!
So, back to eminent domain- this would be THEE place to use it- to reclaim the PD for PUBLIC USE, and get the hooks out of the department for fear that the rent will increase another 100%- or the force might stop receiving free rat burgers and beer under the table! And maybe then, maybe , the PD Force would be back to serving the PUBLIC!

Sorry
|
I don't want the building back it not efficient for the PD never was and still isn't.
They just need to get out of there , lose a couple of detectives and get some more patrol officers on at night when they are needed not all of them higher paid "Miami vice" cops hanging out at the station tryin' to lookin' cool.
As far as Eminent Domain I think they did an excellent job on that part of the charter.
I don't want the city to be able to just take whats mine that I have paid for just to give it to someone else.
Sorry , that's my right to think that way.

Our faultThe CITY sold that place and AGREED to rent it. It is not the buyers fault that we have not found a new place for our police department. It would be completely unethical, and maybe illegal, to claim eminent domain on a piece of property that we previously owned for the same purpose that we use it for now under a rental.
I agree that the rental contract was very poorly done. We should not be responsible for major repairs on a piece of property that we don't own. But again, it was AGREED to.
We need to find a way to house our police and fire departments, yes. But eminent domain in this case is not it.

hey Sorry, how may detectives do you think our little backwater has on staff? No need to apologize for how you think even if what you think is stupid.

I can't belive there are people in this town who honestly belive the cops could be bought for some hamburgers. So either that poster is an idiot or he his just out to smear the cops. Whichever is the case the post is a first class schmuck. If I were a cop I would hope the landlord raised the rent drasticaly then the city would have to finally address the substandard work facility we have forced them to operate out of. But if I'm wrong I'll invite the cops over to my place for a BBQ and then I can go rob banks.

Eminent Domain???
|
I dont neccessarily disagree with the eminent domain part of the new charter, at least how i understand it, but the city sold and rented that S*** hole with the expectation that the PD would have moved long before now. But now because no one in the city can seem to move forward with any one plan from each new term of council to the next...we are stuck paying for a s***hole PD at high rate rents to a less than reputable business.?????? and for how long cause as I hear there aint no plan to move the PD soon. You think they don't look the other way??? well go sit outside of sloans bar at closing time and see if you see any cops doing anything with all the drunks leaving the bar/employees included!.........I sure haven't and me and my fido almost got ran over by one once!!!! they sure dont wanna here my complains!

The police don't want to hear your complaints? I can't blame them, maybe it's because you sound like an ignorant hillbilly.
