Palin

A hot, sexy liar?

It is simply a fact that she has lied over and over again. Just to pick the most obvious example, about that "bridge to nowhere."

She states it very emphatically in her acceptance speech and now her stump speech, "I said thanks but no thanks to that bridge to nowhere."

Well, she's on the record all over the place as being in favor of that bridge until it became a political hot potato and she was forced to drop her support of it. She campaigned for governor supporting it. She supported it after she was elected and she supported it right up until the point that it became a political liability because of bad press and blowback. Here's a picture of her supporting the bridge idea by way of t shirt: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravina_Island_Bridge#History

Now, in the end, despite the implications of her campaign stump speech claims, she still took the federal earmark money that had been allocated for that bridge to nowhere project and used it for other "infrastructure" projects for Alaska.

That's not stretching or embellishing. That is lying to make your record appear different and better than what it is. And continuing to lie after you've been called on it by the press. Isn't that a bit, arrogant? Doesn't it betray a disturbing lack of integrity?

Does that bother you at all? I'm just curious. If you don't care, that's fine, I'm sure you can rationalize it somehow, but just make a really informed choice about who you are voting for there.

Apparently there are other lies/stretches/embellishments in her speech, including that private jet claim, the claim about the personal chef...all kinds of stuff. She's lied about Obama's record on earmarks and just flat out lied about how he never sponsored any legislation or worked with Republicans on any legislation. Those are all flat out lies. Don't take my word for it. It's out there on the web. Certainly the first lie about the bridge is easily exposed since her record is actually quite clear.

I mean, if you don't care, and you're more with McCain on the issues, fine. Or, if you'd vote for McCain come hell or highwater, no matter who he picked for VP, great. But if you are voting on character, and you think her character matters, take a closer look. Don't judge on the basis of one well delivered speech or "relatability."

Politicians lie, they obsfucate, they embellish and fudge. But usually they back down when confronted with the truth.
Not so much here.

Remember the Iraq war? How this administration lied us into that?
Truth matters.
Crockbuster

Earmarks

On earmarks she's an even bigger crock. On the trail with McCain they're telling everyone that she's some kind of earmark slayer when actually, when she was mayor and governor, in both offices, she requested and got more earmarks than virtually any city or state in the country.

I am very disappointed with his kowtowing to the conventional so he could land the nomination. And his pick for VP leaves me absolutely dumbfounded. I think it is very telling that she is kept on a short leash. I seriously question if McCain has confidence in her judgement or ability to govern. Adding her to the ticket seems to have been strategic choice to draw in additional voters; but I find little evidence of wisdom behind her words and actions.

I think I'll stick with an unbiased fact checker. That link was hardly unbiased.

She didn't oppose pork barrel spending or earmarks while her state was raking in the cash from Washington DC, so that's a lie. McCain said she sold the governor's plane (which by the way was used primarily for transporting prisoners) on e bay at a profit. In fact, it did not sell on e bay and it was sold to a supporter at a loss. She didn't oppose lobbying, in fact hired them to bring back the pork to Alaska. She boasts about fiscal responsibility but left her town with a deficit. She boasts about bucking her party but was cozy with Ted Stevens right up until the time he was indicted, and even now won't say that she won't vote for him. She says she went against the oil interests and that is true, but only to push them to drill in Alaska more, and she pushed through a bigger tax on them to go to Alaska residents.

She said she would be open about the investigation into Troopergate, but now she's stonewalling the investigation.

Just a few examples of what I would call "lies" You can call them whatever you want, I call them lies.

And Obama got the heat, deservedly, for "changing his mind" about campaign financing.
Walmart Woman

She never said she sold the plane on Ebay, she said she posted it on Ebay.  Name one State, just one that does not get some pork from DC.  Name one town (including Edgewater) that does not get some pork from DC.  The issue isn't about how much pork the States and cities are getting, it's about change.  Obama=more pork,  McCaine=less pork.  Now who's for change?
She left her town with a deficit.  Your point is?  Most towns (including Edgewater) operate on a deficit.
As far as drilling more in Alaska and off shore to decrease our dependence on foreign oil and the largest transfer of wealth in history, well that is an issue.  I for one say drill, drill, drill and back it up with an aggresive alternative energy program.  Let's get those hydrogen and electric cars on the road.
Now I was never one to buy the tickle down effect of tax breaks for the big corporations but I can tell you that if we increase taxes on the upper 10% income makers the trickle down effect will happen in the form of increased cost to the consumer of goods and services.  You can bank (or not) on that.

Oh, my god? Please tell me you are not a woman posting this? She is doing more harm to our gender that was imaginable.

Interesting article about this issue of Mrs. Palin:

http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/2008/09/11/zombie_feminism/index.html
Walmart Woman

That article states Palin "sucks up to men".  Really?  That's not what the Alaskans say.
Grateful Reader

All of you guys are fantastic!  This National Politics thread is like I have a personal librarian running around finding all kinds of stuff to read, and it isn’t all coming off the same shelf.

Keep up the good work, thanks.

As for the link above, I think it would be more valid if there was some stated goal to achieve perfect androgyny.  Maybe, at some level, Palin honestly embraces some kind of ‘barefoot/pregnant’ ideal.  It is her right, whether I agree with it or not.  I don’t recall anyone professing to be representing the ideal ‘feminist.’  Not Hilary, not Palin.
Walmart Woman

Palin is hardly a barefoot/pregnant persona.  She is not afraid of her feminity but shure has shaken up the Obama camp and has seemed to had an influence on McCains energy policy.  Her political revolution in Alaska has shown that she knows how to play with the boys and beat them at their own game.
Grateful Reader

Agreed, but I read the article to imply that ‘putting the skirt' on  feminism, or being a self described hockey mom, or that being “the recipient of strong male support and approval” is some kind of  inherently bad thing for womankind.  I just think that if that is honestly how Palin thinks and feels than it is her right to feel that way.  If she makes some kind of success out of it, then that’s okay too.  I guess I’m just not as offended or threatened as the article’s author seems to be about the whole Palin's assult on feminism thing.

That's a great article from salon.com. I lover her writing style!

We should never be ashamed of being what we are.  We are not men but that does not make us weak nor incapable.  A politician must stand on merit and not on gender, race or theological belief.  That said, this election is breaking new ground with the first African American and a Femal American running for the two highest offices in the free world, history will be made.  There are going to be some growing pains.  All I ask is that the Pro Obama folks show as much integrity as they rightfully expect from the Pro Palin (read McCain) folks. Let's get down to issues.
The Harlander

CBS Interview

I'm going to throw in my two cents worth.  Let me first say that I was totally taken in by this Alaskan Ice Storm.  Everything about her appeales to me.  Strong local government background, taking on the good old boys and winning, grassroots, family oriented and did I mention.....she's hot.
As I watched the interview tonight I noticed two things.  First she is confident, you need that in a leader.  Second, she was doing the Obama side step.  By that I mean she tried to control the debate and not answer the question as asked.  Now all politicians do it and Obama is a master of it but, Palin is about reform (her words).  She had better get her act together or I'm going looking for a third party candidate because McCain doesn't get my vote without Palin.
Sarah, there is alot more to the international stage than Alaskan energy and Alaskan energy will not put food on my plate.

Worried

McCain doesn't get my vote without Palin.

This is a real disappointing statement. If you won't vote for a president based on his own merits, then you shouldn't be voting for him at all.
Frankly, I am pretty worried that anyone would consider McCain with Palin at all. She has no clue how to manage foreign affairs. She is obviously unfamiliar even with the current policies of foreign affairs. Did anyone see her interview with Charles Gibson? Are you going to leave it up to unknown advisors to Palin to run the country if McCain dies?
All her other inadequacies aside, I would be very afraid if she were in charge of a war. My son is in Iraq right now. Another has been there and could easily be re-deployed. I sure as hell don't want Sarah Palin as their commander in chief.
The Harlander

Also worried

Then why would you vote for Obama?  He has no military or executive experience at all and neither does Biden.  Now I don't know about you but, I do not vote for a single person for President, I vote for a ticket.  To me Mcain has a lot of pluses but he needs a good running mate.  Palin seems to round out the ticket with her knowledge on energy.  I just hope she can bring it together a bit more on foriegn policy.  I'm sorry but Obama and Biden just don't do it for me and I might say a rather large population of fellow Americans.  Remember this race is very close.  I also, as an independant, I look at the third party tickets as well.

I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight.....

* If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're
"exotic, different."
* Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers,  a quintessential American
story.

* If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
* Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.

* Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
* Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well
grounded.

* If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become
the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter
registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12
years as a Constitutional Law professor,  spend 8 years as a State
Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become
chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee,
spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a
state of  13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving
on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's
Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.

* If your total resume is: local weather girl,  4 years on the city
council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000
people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000
people, then you're qualified to become the country's second
highest ranking executive.

* If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while
raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches,
you're not a real Christian.

* If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left
your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're
a Christian.

* If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education,
including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the
fiber of society.

* If , while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with
no other option in sex education in your state's school system
while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant , you're very
responsible.

* If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position
in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner
city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's
values don't represent America's.

* If you're husband is nicknamed "First Dude",  with at least one
DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to
vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated
the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely
admirable.

OK, much clearer now.

Farmer, there are many brilliant Edgwaterites who can give you invaluable opinons and advise. We spend a lot of time reading and researching the candiates. We are trying to be very well informed and to share the information here. Wait for the debates? They may be the deciding factor, indeed.  But listen to yor neighbors and friends here in Edgewater. We may not be wealthy but we are often wise. I will offer my opinion.  Vote OBAMA.  A man for ALL THE PEOPLE. Capable of leading our country and wth Biden as his running mate, the only choice that makes any sense to lead us out of this  mess made in large part by eight years of the republican party-- McCains party.
Guest

Ditto for McCain.  Clinton set up the Bush years and never caught Osama before he did real harm.  Obama want's us to get out of Iraq leaving it to Iran while we take the same troops to invade another nuclear power, Pakistan.  That is a recipe for disaster.  Then the guy wants to negotiate with the likes of  Mohammed Ahmadinejād, Kim Jong-il and Hugo Chavez.  That's some foreign policy.
As far as the economy goes I don't need Obamas socialistic tax plan nor McCains corporate welfare.  We need a 15% flat tax and cut the tax code from 66,000 pages to about 20.
Palin is the only one making sense as far as social issues.  She realizes that her personal moral decisions would not necessarily make good public policy.  That came out in the Oberman interview.  That is real and honest.  As far as Troopergate goes, the idiot tazed her nephew and threatened to kill her father.  Good for her if she brought the full force of the Governors office down on the sorry SOB.

Didn't George H and George W both graduate from Harvard?  That's a wash.  And you forgot some of those radical Anti-American associations Barack had during his "community organizer years".  If you want to make fun of how people name their children I'm sure Milia and Natasha are no stranger than Willow, Trig and Track.  Most of the time as a State Senator he voted "present".  He may have sponsored 131 bills but he never authored a single one, at the State or Federal level.   And if you think mooseburger is wierd try eating a Chicago style pizza (some say it's made with rat meat).
We can spin this thing any way you want.

The Elitist Manifesto

We should regulate who is allowed to vote.  Most voting Americans simply do not qualify.  They are under educated louts that will jump on any populist band wagon that comes along with a pretty face.  Let’s face the facts, Joe Sixpack is his own worst enemy.  Ask him to recite the pledge and he does.  Wave a flag in front of him and he dutifully puts hand on heart.  Sing the Star Spangled Banner and he cheers.  He is so foolish as to believe that he has any concept about the subtle nuances of government.  Sometimes he gets elected to city council or, heaven forbid, mayor of a small town and actually thinks he affects anything of real value.
I for one strongly believe that the future leadership of this country should be decided in the secret chambers of the Skull and Bones Society of Harvard.  As for the little people?  Let them eat cake.
Guest

Hear! Hear!  I try to understand and pay attention but at the end of the day I don’t believe for one second that I am qualified to choose the leader of a nation with the global influence of the United States of America.  I’m also arrogant enough to believe that I am better qualified than most.  Scares the heck out me that the general public votes on stuff like this.  I like chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting.

ah, Farmer...

this ain't no horse race, pickin' a "winner" is not the same as casting your ballot in the interest of your family and your nation.
On the lighter side, anybody seen that handicapper who calls the EW horse race? I sure could use some comic relief about now, I just heard from a friend in Ohio that the New Yorkers are calling Obama "Bambi" and that ain't good. Time for some red meat. Anyone got a problem with deckin' a woman?

MSNBC as a "news" source.  Hmmmmmmm?
In the Rockey Mountain News today:
The Obama campaign was careful to keep the media penned inside a little area and volunteers were militant abot not letting reporter mingle among the crowd.  But volunteers did say reporters could call out to people-alittle like carnival barkers- to ask them to come over to the fencing to talk about Obama.
The best place to fetch people?  The line outside the portable toilets, which at times stretched to 50 deep.

Make of it what you will.  I lost my appetite for Obama when I tried to get a yard sign a few weeks back.  They wanted $15.00 for it.  Then Palin burst on the scene and I realized McCain was not a Bush knock off.

Sarah Palin's powerful "First Dude":

http://www.salon.com/news/feature.../16/todd_palin/?source=newsletter

So if she gets into office will he also be "VP"?

And why all this about Palin? She is after all just running for VP? What happened to McCain?  Too weak perhaps to stand up to the media hype? Who would run the country if McCain was elected? A group of unqualified and weak republicans. Like Bush? Like Cheney? Again. Can our economics stand another 4 years of rape by the big businesses and weak leadership. I don't think so.

Don't be blinded by the media hype, this is the future of our country. We have to have a strong leader. That leader is Obama. He makes sense, he has grounded ideas, he is fair, articulate, highly educated, and he does have realistic plans for leading our country out of this crisis.

Whoa! Somebody has been eating those mushrooms growing in the bog at CitizensPark! Or 8 years of the Bush administration has made some of you paranoid.
I think that IF McCain makes it to the whitehouse he will return to his previous sexist leanings, pat Palins pretty little head and put her to work with some charity functions and ladies teas. She will exist only as another of his pretty faces. The real problem there will be if he dies. Then we have this pretty little face running the country. Her face, her extreme religious beliefs, and her unrealistic views of running the country.
Yeah. That's what I want in a president.

Hell yes.  We need a pretty face in the White House.  You know how hard it is to look at a poster full of Presidential portraits.  Damn, thats about as exciting as looking at the obit pictures in the newspaper.

Every time McCain and Palin speak, I am more certain that Obama and Biden are the only possible choice. I become more confident every day in their leadership abilities and more frightened of the Republican party.
