A Great New Restaurant within walking distance

At least within walking distance for a lot of us............

Just had dinner at a fine new venue up at 32nd and Lowell, oddly named - VENUE!

At 3609 W. 32nd Ave it's not - unfortunately (at least for now!) in Edgewater, but it's within walking distance - something that helps define our neighborhood as not just a destination, but a center.

Venue, owned and run by a casually attired Holly Hartnett, boasts an innovative menu and far-reaching wine list that uses all of its casual ambiance to best advantage.

Let's start with an understated so0und system that allows diners to converse without shouting - a welcome departure from the typically overbearing squall heard in most restaurants.

Let's move on to an understated decor - clean, spare, artistic - that allows the eye to wander around the restaurant or out onto the street, through the street-side window wall, while one shares easy conversation and time to peruse the wine list and menu.

Ah, the menu! Delicate soups, Manila clams or mussels included in the appetizers and a small but dazzling array that ran from Barramundi fillets to a vegetarian ravioli that was to die for!

It was a stretch to go for the desert after appetizers and entrees, but we pushed on for the last portion (yes, they make everything fresh - when they're out, they're out) of a ginger creme brule accompanied by a fine California Port that allowed us to linger with the ambiance of Christmas Eve, late into the evening, without the standard pressure to finish and make room for more trade.

All the while, the service was decidedly understated, with the staff casually strolling by but not intervening unless it appeared to their experienced eye that they were needed.

How the heck did Paris get so close to Edgewater?!?!

Add to this the fact that Holly changes the menu every 4-6 weeks to maintain a freshness and seasonal flair. I could wish for this Venue to be located in Edgewater, but until that happens I'll take the stroll there to get hungry and the stroll back to settle a fine meal. Edgewater is closer than you think to being at the Center of Things, and with spots like Venue within easy reach we are able to see the bright life creeping over the horizon towards us, and are able to walk out and greet it. Take a stroll, Edgewater, and don't worry about dropping tax money in someone else's neighborhood - the more we support area culture the more we encourage it to come to us!

Bon appetite!

Thank you for the review

Not often, but every once in a while I stumble upon a thoughtfully worded, substantive post on the Talking Stick. Thank you for the restaurant review and I agree with your perspective that it is valuable to know about places close to Edgewater not just in Edgewater.  From your description this Venue is worth a visit.
