So, City Council decided to blow up thousands of dollars on the 3rd of July.
Bike paths, picnic tables, better bus stops, kids stuff, workout equipment, a volleyball court. a basketball court. It could have been a lot of things but it's gone now. Poof! Up in smoke.
Oh well, there will be fun parties. No one will be disappointed. The tradition will live on. Thanks Edgewater residents for helping to make this the recreational and cultural desert that it is. Enjoy your whiz, pop, bang. I'm taking my dog and heading for the mountains. |

| Your point is well received by many. And if it helps, the vote was close - 4 to 3. Some of those opposed were very, very strongly opposed. There is still hope that we can move toward a better goal. |

| Why is it an either/or situation? Why can there not be both the fireworks, but then also work on bike paths, programs, etc.? There is plenty of open space money. |

In a few months a city manager will be working for the city. He or she will be there to hear all of us when we say: We need recreational programs for the entire population. All of council has said this is a priority. They'll be working on this.
Don't be silent, let the new manager know how you feel. I certainly will. We need programs. Good programs. You're right, we have money in open space dollars for programs. Don't give up.
I don't know if you were at any of the council meetings, but there was much citizen support and always has been for the fireworks. We can do both. Have tradition and recreational programs. I think it'll happen sooner than later. |

I can agree with this- although - not having all the details- I find it hard to swallow the percentage increase needed for safety factors to the tune of 30K+ for a total package price when really the "rumors of a lost finger" or the problems with the traffic flow, lights and light posts were the worst that Edgewater has encountered during this event.
But there was GREAT public support to keep a long-standing tradition going! The citizens spoke, despite being told by president Cooke that he didn't care to hear from them in chambers, yet apparently were heard. Not sure who voted Y/N, but thanks to those of you who opened your ears, eyes and minds - to allow this traditional event that so many of us love and appreciate (and appreciate the VFD for doing) to continue. I hope the show is more spectacular than ever with lots of joyful spectators, neighbors, friends, vendors and maybe a band before the event starts?
It's a high price tag for "traffic flow"- in my opinion. But maybe that is because I have lived in cap hill where you are lucky to find a parking spot 5 blocks from your house on a normal day....and from one who is used to sitting in "exit traffic" from sporting events and concerts frequently.....but I do support safety, but fall back on the phrase "moderation is key" folks.
In the end, I am pleased to see council vote (even on a close vote) to keep a FINE tradition going on in Edgewater!
I also agree with concerned that we need better programming for our youth and greater community. There are open space funds, but best to plan ahead and spend them wisely. Some projects cost much more than you might imagine and having some $ in store for the future is not a bad idea!
I hope the issues with the P/R Board and director get worked out quickly and the Board once again becomes viable and active, viewed as a useful, beneficial entity that it has been, and has the support of the City it serves...
And let's get some baby swings in this town- while I'm at it! (even though mine are passed that stage)

| I agree with a previous poster that there is plenty of open space funds for both. As for 30 K, I think if were going to have the show and I am glad we are lets make it as safe as possible. 30 K is nothing comapred to the life of a child getting ran over by Sheridan traffic because we had no one to slow it down. Good job and thanks to Chief Keough. |

| I feel the same way about trees. If one child gets hurt or killed climbing trees, then cut down all the trees I say! |

At the Council meeting where they approved the funds for the fireworks out of Open Space funds Councilman Adam Gardner stated he would fund raise for a July 3rd fireworks display in 2010, instead of taking the money out of Open Space. Council President David Cooke said he would help him raise the money. I hope they were sincere.
All of you who came to Council and asked for the fireworks, I hope you will help as well.
The Open Space funds should now be used for more substantive, on-going programs for our youth, our seniors and the general population, in my opinion. Let's stop running to Open Space when we get strapped for cash and begin to plan for the responsible use of this fund to establish a solid Parks and Recreation program for Edgewater. |

Was the pledge for 2010 or to recover the costs for 2009?
